David Mancuso brings the Loft of the Queen Mary

Long Beach is lucky—we’re just about to get a small helping of something fortunate New Yorkers have been enjoying for 37 years. David Mancuso, the legendary DJ and founder of the seminal Loft parties, is making a rare West Coast appearance. Since 1970, Mancuso has fostered a true dance revolution in music, the results of which are still felt in just about any club across the globe. It was at the Loft—originally his own home!—that Mancuso began hosting “invitation only” dance parties for his friends, utilizing the finest sound system around to help create the ultimate pleasurable experience.
“He’s definitely been one of the biggest influences on disco music,” says Tim Sweeney, DJ and host of the Beats in Space radio show. “The sound system he brings is made to make each track sound as amazing as possible. It’s never too loud, and when you’re right in the middle, it’s perfect.”
Indeed, the Loft parties of the 1970s proved to be a fertile ground for some of the most influential figures in dance music. DJs and remixers such as house pioneer Frankie Knuckles, Nicky Siano of the Gallery, Francois Kevorkian (remixer of U2, Kraftwerk, and Depeche Mode, among many others), and the late Larry Levan of the Paradise Garage were all regulars at Mancuso’s early parties. But despite taking his Loft experience on tour, Mancuso stayed true to his goal, shying away from anything that would hinder the music and the vibe.
“I’ve been to the Loft, and it was the perfect sound, perfect selection, and perfect vibe,” says Mike Simonetti, proprietor of Troubleman Unlimited records and a DJ himself. “It’s literally PERFECT, dude. In New York City there’s a lot of old Loft people who come out and who put baby powder on the floor so they can dance and do the spin moves. It really is an amazing thing.”
