Confused with hooking up vinyl and cd players

basically, i've had this problem for a while, tho i've just managed to work round it annoying as it is!

below is an editted pic of how i have my decks connected to my mixer:

basically this is my problem, my vinyl comes through too loud! every single one of them!

if i leave the EQ's in the middle while playing a vinyl, it red lines through the roof! i have to turn the EQ's equally down to around 10 o'clock to keep it in the red. the same happens if i try it in the other spare channel.

any ideas?

thanks in advance!

The phono input is too loud? Did you try switching your cd player into the phono input and the turntables inot the cd input? maby its screwed around

Or maby your turntables have a line level input ?

What turntables are you using? I think some of the new ones (like the Numark TTX's, perhaps) don't have a true phono connection b/c the pre-amp is in the unit itself. Does your turntable have a ground cable? If not, probably pre-amped.

if i turn the gain down it still redlines, yes - it does make a little difference but where there's a beat it is still hitting the red quite frequently - thus turning the EQ's down a little bit

just tried using the line inputs but nothing wotsoever comes out of the mixer as expected

the tt is old, very old... numark TT-1520 and yep, it has a ground wire

try hooking it up to every phono connection to see if it's the connection or the mixer, could be the TT too

try find another TT and hook it up to see if that's the problem too

go through and eliminate every possibility and you'll find your problem

Phono inputs have built in pre-amps to bring TT audio signals up to line-level. otherwise it would be extremely low volume.

well, giving the age of the TT (about 6yrs) it is quite a possibility it is that. unforunately the other 1 i had is in the loft/atic somewhere - too lazy to climb up there. if i swap the TT to the other phono's on my mixer i get the same situation so it all points towards the TT at the minute. quite unlikely to be the mixer if it happens on all 4 channels... isn't it?
