Andrew Garcia - Fuji (320kbps MP3)

Hi there this is one of my latest tracks and while I don't normally post my productions on the forums I'm in some need of advice. While the vast majority of labels have responded well and I've had a few offers, a rep from one of the labels mentioned a few things that I'm considering and not quite sure if it's an opinion thing or if it's generally true of the track:

1) apparently the low end is muddled
2) apparently the highs arent crisp enough
3) apparently the lead isnt driving enough

I was pretty sure during the mastering process I took care of all this but please let me know. I appreciate it.

Hmmm, low end is a little muddy but easily fixable, but it also sounds like your kick is clipping a little.
You may want to try taking some of the freqs out of the mid of the kick. Just lower it a little around 250 to 800.

Everything seems very central in the mix so you would probably want to get a bit more creative with the panning. Especially with the extra percs. Although panning is never a solution for a bad mixdown over all it can be part of the solution in terms of breaking up sounds a little and utilising headroom more effectively.

You might want to try ducking the high hats and bass a little (Not much) to give the track a little more drive. Would also make the kick and bass combination sound a little less muddy as they wouldn't be sharing freqs in the same way.

With high hats and percs, take out as much low stuff as you can without loosing the characteristic of the sound. you have a lot of lowerend stuff that isn't needed there.

Have you compressed the percs with the kick and bass? I find this makes the track gel much better.

The lead sound probably has had a little too much cut in the high freqs as it sounds pretty flat.

You could proabably benefit from using a maximizer like BBE on some parts too.

I think the track could do with some more work creatively too and some variation but that's just personal taste.

Cheers
Nem

Thanks so much for the advice nem...you've pointed out some excellent details that I had been trying to pinpoint..I suppose spending so much in the production you don't hear it the same any more. As far as compressing the percs a bit more, do you think they would benefit from a better mastering job? I feel like my mastering isn't very strong which might be taking a way from what was originally a better mixdown.

Cheers,
andrew

My advice would also probably be to put it down for a few weeks as whilst you are working on it, your ears become accustomed to your interpretation of the sound and not the actual sound. Leave it for a while and you actually hear it differently.
