online gaming question

about to move out of my house and will finally be able to afford a new net connection

just wanted to know how much bandwidth gaming online takes? coz im thinking ill go for speed > DL limit, but id hate to be halfway thru a game and then my connection gets shaped!

some advice would be dandy
