So Im finally selling off most of my collection of vintage analog synthesizers and digital keyboards. Why? Just don't play them much anymore. ya gotta have a band and shit. Ya know, with other members. I'd now like to get into DJing so I can drop those beats I so love to dance to. I'm looking for everyones opinions on what gear to get, what methods the way to go, everyones favorite guides, etc. Im thinking I want to do a digital route by using laptops instead of turntables (cd or vinyl), but Id like to hear input on that too. Thanks for your opinions and help everyone.

okay, I'll probably get beat for this, but, I think you should get either CD's or Vinyl for the sake of having a more hands-on expeirence while you spin. I'm not saying that going directly to the lap-top is a bad choice, but, wouldn't you rather learn/train yourself the old fashion way be it CD and/or Vinyl?

don't be stupid. it's better to have both. keep your gear and add a dj set up. that's how a real man rocks it.

you never know what's gonna happen tomorrow. you might experience something that will make you want to play w/your gear again, and you'll be happy you have it. what happens if you sell your stuff, and then you find out you don't like dj'ing that much after all...

don't sell. i went down that road already. i almost cried (literally) when i sold my mpc several years ago. selling other stuff hurt too, but letting go of the mpc almost pushed me to consider committing suicide.

also, i would like to add that i enjoy playing vinyl more than cd's.

playing cd's definately gets the job done, but i find playing vinyl to more wholesome and enjoyable. same goes for shopping for records/cd's rather going to sites where you can buy and dl music.

doing it oldschool w/vinyl allows you to experience more as a dj than just playing music and working the mixer. it allows you to mingle, and be part of a culture, and lifestyle. hitting record stores in person, talking to people, getting recommendations, and digging thru crates your self is something totally different from shopping online.

shopping online has it's own set of virtures, but for me personally it only works when i know what i'm looking for. when i'm kinda poking around from something new/different, i'd rather be a store, and talking to people.

i also hate organizing, re-naming tracks, adding artist info so i can burn cd's. i also hate the process of burning cd's. -that's because i used just putting the record on the platter and just play it... i never had to jump thru so many hoops just to play a song.

Sorry, but for me the one thing I found, the more I played other peoples tunes the more the more I wanted to make my own to play in sets.

Besides, work with ableton and the midi possiblities are endless. You can both DJ and produce music with it. Sounds like you are a musician so I would strongly recomend that you perhaps just sell your least favourite to get the gear and then take it from there.

As a musician you are going to reach a point when just mixing other peoples music is not enough.
