How long does a DJ career span?

Or maybe how long it should span?

Paul Oakenfold seems like never ending..

DJ culture hasn't been popular long enough to calculate an accurate average.

that is such a vague/genereal question... the answer is "it depends"...

a dj that sticks to one genre his/her entire life in one particular place will *probably* have a shorter career than one who reinvents himself and changes with the music.

there are niche markets for every type of dj in the world. even if "trance is dead" there are still plenty of trance djs out there making a good living filling venues. same applies to different genres.

how long will a dj be a superstar dj is a different question (pointing that out since you used oakenfold as an example). there will always be people that will go see oakenfold because either a) they've heard about him from friends, b) they downloaded an mp3 mislabeled and feel he creates EVERY dance song out there, c) they want to see a legend no matter how good/bad he is at least once, etc...

the same as any other career i'd imagine!

i couldnt see tiesto spinning into his 50's though... and i certaintly dont think he'd be spinning trance, if trance is still around in 20 years

its difficult as people have said though, because the dance genre is relatively new

lol gold..

but the answer to that question is : "Its ALL about the passion, Babe!" lol

I mean really, how many of us will be listening to edm 40 to 50 years from now? I know I will, most likely. but people that just do it for the fad....wont last. same thing is for djs if they don't love their job and only focus on one crowd....wont last.

DJing has only been around since Disco, thats roughly 30 - 40 years. Then again i haven't heard of any succesful DJs that have been DJing since then.
