It's 12:39am and I've been working on a new track for the last 9 hours without a break. The thing is, I do this often. I have been making trance for 3 or 4 years now and seem to be getting no where. This is the 1st time I have felt like giving up. Do u guys ever feel the same?
I know not everyone can be a superstar but I can't even finish a complete track. I have never been too good with my synth/lead work so I have mastered my percussion and drums and think I am pretty good with my basslines.
I took an electronic music production course a year ago with my mate and I learnt a hell of a lot. But I still can't seem to get any decent melodies down!! I also admit I never did too well with chord theory and all that kind of stuff so I'm always manually correcting with my mouse.
I feel so shit right now, music is the only thing I know and love (apart from basketball but hey I'm only 5'7" so I didn't get as far as I'd like ;-)
Usually I don't care how crap/good I'm doing, I always have a lot of fun trying to make my own tunes. But today is the 1st day I Have felt like I am wasting my life away....

Stop thinking you have to get somewhere and then you will never have the thought again.

More or less every single time I try to do something. You just have to get over the feeling somehow. I think it's mostly because you usually tend to be your own worst critic and in reality your work is far less shit than you think.

I guess try doing some remixes, as that way the melody etc is done already for you??
That's an idea.... I have over 60,000 .midi files waiting patiently to be inserted in to my sequencer :-) Basically that's most half decent songs since the 50's.

If you're having trouble with melody, why not try making something that isn't dependent on it? Tech house, bangin' techno, glitch, drone ambient, musique concrete, scouse ( ).

Unless you have some serious deadline, take a break and let the insperation come to you (and not the other way around).

yeah i think giving your ears some time to breathe is always a good idea...
I've never produced and haven't been DJing that long but in general in life I find... have a two week break from things you love. After that you will rediscover how fun or cool it is and will probably have a few new innovations to bring to the table.
