Wow. Easily in top 3 party of the yr, and I think this will stay up there.
Got to Guv at 11. Little line up. Mark O putting some some deep prog house. Good stuff.
Went up to Skybar when it opened up but wasn't feeling Joee Cons (I think) so came back for more Oliver.
Oliver MacGregor... Didn't know who he was but I guess he's Lawler's opener DJ. Lots of afterhours ish prog house. I dunno. I'm in mood for that stuff later in the night and not before warm up for the headliner. Since Mark O played some of this stuff too so by the time Lawler came on at 2, I had enough of dark and gritty prog house for a while.
So Lawler came on and the Guv got PACKED. First time seeing Lawler and I had expectations. Was in the middle of the floor with Andrew, Sara, Pett and Carney and Josh and tried to groove to the tunes. And Lawler delivered a solid set.
Except I felt that the Guv isn't the right place for those kind of beats. Or maybe because I got fed up with people trying to pass through and I couldn't concentrate to what tunage was being dropped. I said fuck it and went up to the top and I jived by myself up there. Sound quality sucked, but at least people aren't breaking my concentration.
I dunno. I just wasn't feeling it. I'm more into Desyn/Luke Fair style more uplifting prog these days and I was more psyched into seeing Desyn. Maybe if Lawler played at a smaller club with minimal lights? I wasn't feeling the vibe. Ah well.
Went up to Skybar around 3:45 and I think it was Nathan Barato dropping some heavy tunage. Lots of trippy techy shit that got the mojo going, but by this time, I've been standing for like 12 hrs straight and my legs were killing me. He dropped Daft Punk - Harder Faster (? remix). Wow. TUNE! (And Josh went crazy) Very impressed by Mr Barato!
Oliver MacGregor came back and he killed the energy Barato built up and went back to more afterhours stuff. Is it me, or did it seem like he played couple of same tunes from his earlier set?
The hype of the event, Lawler's Sunrise Set...
Wow.
He started off pretty slow and wasn't until like 40 mins into the set that he started to drop some heavy bombs. So this was what all the hype was about!
Lighter on the bass, but some electro y, techy, trippy, mindfucking goodness all around! Excellent track selection and programming. Dude was just in the zone. I dunno what else to say except it was one of the masterpiece that you just cannot believe that you've heard.
Wow.
Skybar was rammed, but people weren't as pushy as the main room. Lots of people stayed all the way till the end around 8:10. Vibe was AMAZING
Wow.
I don't think I'll get over this set for a long time.
Mark O: 7/10
Oliver MacGregor: 6/10
Nathan Barato: 8.5/10
Steve Lawler main room: 6/10
Steve Lawler Skybar: 10/10
Overall: 8.5/10
Random thoughts
-is it me, or was the crowd more sketchier than normal, esp. at Skybar?
-first time at Guv since the renovation... Not feeling it.
-went to the front to take some pics of mark O. DJ booth was at eye level. Take out camera. Booth at sky high. I wondered for a bit if I was being sketched out. LOL. Forgot about the hydraulic booth thingy.
-partying from 4:30pm till 8:10am is hard without being drunk or on pills. man, I'm getting old
-Guv main room sound sucked. way too much bass.
-Skybar was good soundwise. could have used a bit more bass though, but I guess noise complaint stops that.
-I hate where the DJ booth is at Skybar
