An act of political violence is never a good sign. I don't think there is any question that such attempts do sever harm to democratic societies. There can be no claim that democracy is functioning when the representatives of the population are being threatened.
Unfortunately this seems quite similar to the thread I posted not so long ago about revolutions:
I'm interested in watching the fall out from this political violence. If things keep ratcheting up the way they have been going for the past decade or so there could be some serrious trouble.

"They interview Dr. Bob Dolgoff, the medical director of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center's mental health division. "I doubt people who say this is about politics have a good understanding of mental illness," he says. "It could be conspiracy theories or men from outer space. The important thing here is, why wasn't he in treatment?" They note Loughner's odd "obsession" with the Mayan prophecy of a 2012 apocalypse, mind control, illiteracy and the gold standard. This guy's politics reminds me a lot more of certain people on TA than it does Sarah Palin. Kind of frightening, to be honest.

I'm surprised stuff like this hasn't been happening sooner. IMO it'll get worse except with perfectly SANE people.

Stop perpetuating some falsehood that this is a right-wing thing. Loughner is a mentally ill sociopath. The guy is freaking batty.

ok, ok, how about this:
The right attracts mentally ill sociopaths.
I do think it's a non issue to say that the trend is that right wing thinking has much more violence in it than left wing thinking.
