The sound of cubase's EQ has been greatly improved as well as the delay/reverbs. They'll get you pretty far if you can bare to use them. I use the delays/eq all the time. The dynamics are ok, too, but won't give you that "warmth" that you can squeeze out of C1 and Rcomp. That's about it really. Definitely above-decent quality.

Wave arts and sonalksis are alternatives, (altho neither have reverb or the limiter which are both useful) does anyone know of any other alternatives?

Oh damn, they do too, my bad... I was thinking of sonalksis, great plugins but they don't have any reverb. I don't have the Wave Arts things, but I really like the Classik studio reverb by IK multimedia.
@ Meridian: I agree that hardware keys are crap, I would rather buy the software then use the cracked version And software companies wonder why people don't buy their stuff...
But I dissagree with you on ipods, I have one and I love it And I use itunes for my music library, I hate all the other options, but iTunes works beautifully- I don't know why people hate it.

I use the Waves gold bundle with Cubase 4, the effects and tools work great. But it really depends if you personally like the Waves products or not. For me personally, they're incredibly easy to use and deliver exactly what I want from them. I like their layout, their sound, their functionality.
Nobody can tell you what your preferred DAW is, or what synths you should buy, or effects. There are no "must haves". For some people, it's worth the money and iLok USB key and then choosing whether or not to subscribe to Waves' update plan. For the gold bundle, the update plan is $140 per year, which is in the same general ballpark as upgrading other pieces of audio software from one version to the next. They keep adding tools to their bundles, so if you're signed up to WUP, all of a sudden you'll have a convolution reverb, then you have something else...I see it the same way as upgrading to the latest version of Cubase, or Reason, or whatever.
It's 100% up to you - either they're right for you or they're not.
