Punishment in Malaysia, flogging style

I guess this is better than hanging. In Malaysia, drug dealers get sweet treatment (I think an effective, but very cruel and harsh one). If you watch the clip, you can hear 'Allah Acbar' from the poor guy. The best part of the article is:

"The minister added: "The video is a means to educate the public and to show how hideous caning can be. It is a deterrence for drug traffickers and drug addicts.

"Somehow somebody duplicated it and posted it on the website, but it's not done by our officials. It is for education and training purposes, there's no big deal about it."

I'm suprised the Daily Mail don't support this kind of punishment (in fact I am 100% sure that at some point one of their journalists or commentators will have called for corporal punishment to be reintroduced in the UK)

Altho it does highlight what a scummy paper it is:

"Videoing a man being tortured is wrong, and to highlight that, here's the video right here on our website!"

You probably really want me to get flogged as well, sucker! You seriously gotta stop being so critical of me, or I will find something to bite back at ya ;-)

This flogging is quite disgusting. I think its a good deterrent (as in "it will work"), but quite against the Geneva Conventions I think.

I wasn't being critical of you at all! I was having a pop at the Daily Hate Mail which is one of the most right-wing racist newspapers in the UK

Alright then, I was more of referring to the other Russian thread ... just noting that I dont let people roll over me easily, and I don't take personal attacks as jokes, but as insults, and I can sometimes mount a very mean attack in response, if time permits ...

but yeah, I agree that Daily Mail has done wrong by posting a gruesome video link ON ITS WEBSITE. Thats bad. Though I didnt know previously on the flogging practises in Malaysia. I heard many good thing about Malaysia, but now I forgot all about them, cant recall ... care to refresh my memory?

TO be fair, I am actually quite scared of someone who posts on the internet 1000s of miles away from where I live. No, seriously

How does Geneva Convention apply to a national justice system?

Isn't Malaysia a Geneva Convention signatory? so therefore, that would mean ...

Geneva convention concerns the treatment of enemy civilans and POWs during international conflicts. How is it related to the punishments handed out by a country's court to its own citizens ?

The Geneva conventions are primarily centred around international relations, war, treatment of prisoners and refugees. They don't really focus on domestic management and policy, I mean otherwise Saudia Arabia (which is also a signatory along with Malaysia) which does similar things to people and even the US with it's state sanctioned capital punishment would be much the same.
What you want to look at is the UN universal declaration of human rights which is more focused on the welfare of people (like the GC's), more or less ignored by a lot of nations for religious, cultural or domestic reasons.

Caning is pretty nasty, seen worse.

but effective ? Punishments that hurt physically (although barbaric by "western" standards) are nonetheless more effective than jail terms IMO.

No, the beatings I've seen in certain countries where designed to maim and terrorise, systematic breaking of limbs, massive soft tissue trauma over a period of anywhere between 8 hours and a couple of days depending on how badly they disliked you.
