does poker class as sport?

For the purposes of this forum?

How many of you good trance folks enjoys online poker? I imagine quite a few, just curious as to where you all play and stuff. Would be good to get some sort of private tournament going at some stage maybe! There's a few sites where you can set up online private tournaments, could be fun.

I dub this the thread of all things poker.

I haven't played in a while. Eventually, I'd like to get back to playing some cards.

What sites do people use, I like Mansion, but have played Party Poker and Full Tilt and all the popular ones.

I reckon it's an interesting debate. Cus what do you class as a sport, does it have to involve phsyical prowess? general fitness of body? I'd say not, cus they class Snooker, Darts etc as sports, so why can't it be considered? If you believe the pros and they say it's a game of skill with an element of luck, rather than a completely luck based game then I reckon you could say it's a sport.

Any poker game you play will have atleast a minimum %60-%70 luck factor involved in all plays, with the rest perhaps playing skill, but for the most part, dont fool yourself if you think that playing poker isnt gambling as well. You would teach yourself well to understand that concept and make life alot more easier on yourself when you run bad.

im under no illusions, so there's no need to turn into personal life coaching, im just saying merely for the point of discussion. I am in no way delusional. However, if you apply yourself properly and play by sound strategy and have a hell of a lot of patience you can give yourself an edge over your opponents. Of course it's still gambling, but it's a hell of a lot less of a gamble than say the spin of a roulette wheel.

I'm sure poker could fit into this definition:

quote:
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.
3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.

If you over look the esp Outdoors part, because that is not an essential make-up of a sport.

Playing sound poker or playing by the books might win you a bit of change between you and your friends, but at any real competitive level with higher stakes, you would be eaten alive playing patient sound poker. Unless you find a table where that style of poker is very effective (lots of action from lots of bad players), its where a poker player has to learn adaptation and instinctual skills to go with a hell of a lot of patience.

Once again, poker will never be a sport to me, because in the end, the luck factor is too great in any one poker game to be considered a skill based game. But thats just me.
