Paul van Dyk - Virgin Megastore Review (08-14-07)
I know tonight's event wasn't a DJ gig, rather instead it was more like a "Meet & Greet, Autograph" type-session, but as a loyal PvD fan, I just HAD to go, regardless of a dj set or no set. I have respected PvD as an amazing composer and an amazing disc jockey, capable of knowing how to bring progression into his sets to keep the flow and the crowd going, which in return creates a fun night for everyone who appreciates his work.
Tonight, I felt like a little kid going to see Santa Claus. Eager to see, eager to meet. Passed by at 6PM to pick up the "In Between" cd (same costed only $10) Cashier gave me a wrist-band, reminded me to come back around 8 for the signing. I left, and to my surprise didn't see anyone "waiting" outside or inside the Virgin Cafe. [I was expecting to see a "Roxy" like line but I guess I was wrong.]
Came back to Virgin at 7:15 to find a "9:30PM Roxy" like-looking line stretching from the Cafe to the main entrance, wherein Staff directed us to move from standing on 14 St. facing east, to Broadway facing north. Met a guy from Austria who's staying in NY for two week and chit-chatted all the way to PvD's signing.
Long story short, everything moved pretty quick. Sign, take pics, hi/bye/shake hand; next person. Sign, take pics, hi/bye/shake hand; next person. Almost everyone was given a 30 second spotlight with PvD to sign whatever or say whatever, only to get a nod or a smile from PvD.. whatever recognition you received from PvD I guess made everyone's day.
I'd have to say, seeing PvD's reaction to the crowd from past gigs, he's no AvB (smiling, pointing, interacting, et cetera). Maybe the occasional slapping of the hands along with the beats, a smile, a blind, cold stare into the crowd, and I'd have to say, my impression of him from past gigs, definitely remained true today as the crowd was more interactive with him.
Nevertheless, I appreciated every moment spent tonight at Virgin, even if I only had 30 seconds with PvD taking pics, shaking his hand, and getting an autograph. Having respected PvD for so long, having always been buried within the sea of partygoers for the past years at his gigs, and tonight finally spending that 30 seconds with PvD somehow made everything all worth it .. .
^^ this is where he gave me a thumbs up even though it wasn't my turn; wish the shot came out better!!
