I work as a freelance web programmer, and one of my clients (an alumni association) is going to merge with a bigger alumni association. So far, so good. However, they now asked me to e-mail (or phone) each one of the former students in order to update their info.
But, let's be honest: what kind of person would be willing to give their personal info away over the phone (even if I claim to be working for the alumni association) or via e-mail? Is this even common?

True, but:
If I find a legal way of doing that, I don't see why I should ignore a job offer;
I'm the one who is going to insert all the data into the database;
My brother is the one doing all the calling/writing (and he's the one who's going to get most of the money)... I'm just their contact, so to speak.

oh, if it's your brother doing it (and you don't like him very much or he's getting most of the money) well, yeah.

Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a starter home. Choose dental insurance, leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose your future. But why would anyone want to do a thing like that?
