my ps3 upconverts to 1080p and i must say, watching some old dvd's you do notice a crispy difference

like in the matrix 2 where trinity busts out the window in slow mo.. you notice that much more detail on the glass shards.

I thought this was going to be a thread asking for recommendations..
and I was instantly going to say OPPO!
I know a few people with them, and really happy with them. They're very well regarded on the net too

for myself, I just use my pc..

edit: i remember a guy at work was saying the construction and interface of the unit he's got is pretty similiar to el cheapo players, and so they cut back on costs when it comes to that.. but when it comes to video quality it's impressive

considering what you're getting for the money, and how much other players are that have a similiar chipset go for, it's very good value for money..

i wonder how the upscaling on an xbox 1 with xbmc compares to it

Yeah would recommend it too. Watching a DVD on a HD screen with a signal fed through an analog SD cable is nothing compared to it being digitally upscaled and fed through a HDMI or DVI link.

Then again watching a 1080p movie on Blu-Ray on a massive plasma is just incredible!

PKC i spent 4 years selling home theatre and cant say i have ever seen a positive result from any 'affordable' upscaling unit mang...

If the picture quaality isn't there to begin with you only end up with a less natural, overly processed image as a result.

Decent scalers are thousands of dollars for a reason.. it's an extremely difficult thing to do.. remember your TV/monitor will also have its own scaler (which can be good or bad) that will scale the image back to what it's resolution is capable of displaying.

My advice.. If its a feature of something you would buy without the 'upscaling' and you like the result than use it, if you are just looking to buy the unit because of the upscaling feature than dont..buy a HD DVD or Blu Ray player when you are happy with the price you are paying and watch real high res video.

i know the oppo is supposed to be better than the denon 2900.. not sure about the rest of them.. they were worth something like 1500 or 2000 when it first come out, not sure what they're worth now

On a side note, I read the other day the major movie studios are going to support HD-DVD and not BluRay. I thought that was an interesting choice based on the most likely market reach BluRay will get as the PS3 take up ocurs.

even though im biased skot, im pretty sure that its still 6 vs 2 major studios in bluray's favour.. so i wouldn't really be saying "major movie studios are going to support HD-DVD and not BluRay", when 1 meer studio makes the jump (paramount)
