Sampling Issues...

Just got hired to do some remixes for an upcoming Roc Project release. However, I want to use an extended, more thorough sample of the vocals instead of chopping it up like I usually do.

When I analyzed the sample for bpm, I found them to be some awkward count. Is there some software I can get (DL or buy), that will sort of "snap" the sample into grid/selected bpm? Id like it to run about 130, 135 bpms. Of course, the pitch of the sample must remain the same.

Im using Reason 3.0, so I've been manually quantizing all the elements in the mix around the vocals, but eventually things fall apart and sound out of place...

Help!!

Thanks..

Craig

hi craig, congrats on getting hte remix job... i remember listening to the ROC project when i was a kid... however i'm surprised you've never time stretched vocals before?

this is one of the most tedious things in all of productions, literally you need to listen to the original a lot to see where new phrases begin, where the original vocal was meant to be on last bars, 1st bars, on kicks, off kicks, etc... then warp to your hearts desire.

there's no tool to stretch this for you because it's an acapella, how's the software suppose to know the counts on this? plus you wouldn't want something "auto" because more than likely the vocals are off placed for good reason.

Seeing you're working with Reason I'd say your best option would be to convert the samples to REX loops with ReCycle. I found that the most handy way myself. That way you can slice and rearrange the samples whichever way you want.

If you have a copy of Ableton Live Lite laying around from an M-audio keyboard or something, give that a try to warp your vocal tracks to a specific tempo. I think I have a couple Lite v. 4's laying around.. haha.

Using Live: Warp the original track, then rename the warp file to be the name of the vocal sample. Import the vocal sample and it will be identified at the right tempo. From there you can move the BPM up or down...
