Novation RemoteSL automap universal confusion

Hi there! Any RemoteSL-pros here?
I just started to use it and i am quite confused with the automap universal functions. the manuals dont really tell about how to use the remotesl editor software.
As far as i see you can make two different sorts of templates. normal midi-maps as sysex files and as templates for the automap server (vstxml). when i use the editor to make a sysex file and import parameters from a plugin, then i get a view of all control elements with one parameter under each control (pots, encoders, buttons and sliders). it seems to me that this is just one layer. does this mean that you cant use 3 layer-pages with the normal templates?

When I create an automap universal template from the imported plugins (which i would prefer) then i see all three layers beneath each control but i cant see the button to asign parameters to. when i open the vstxml file in an xml editor i can also just find entries for encoders, pots and sliders. how can i assign the buttons? An finally in normal templates i can make a control "toggle" a parameter (like filter on/off) but with automap universal this options doesnt seem to be available.

The remotesl seems to be really usefull but quite confusing for the beginner. can anyone help me?

cheers,

hereander

edit: seems like the vstxml files are different from the *.automap files although they are both xml based. in the *.automap files you also have the button-entries but you cant load those files in the editor. seems like you have to create you template with the controller and not with the editor program unless someone writes an editor (which wouldnt be too difficult as it is xml)

all of this is def in the manual and if you even wanted to watch the videos that ship with the SL you could too.

all you have to do is go into edit mode, choose what value you want(sysex, CC, etc), make sure you're using both LED screens, because what pot you choose will let up on the right with the value of hte CC you want to assign.

oh this disc is a dvd with videos on it. i didnt see that. thanks man! I usually do not use the cd's when i get a new device. they usually ask you to install lots of crap. i just download the latest soft from the vendor.

it seems that it is really easier to make the universal maps on the device than to use an editor. shame that it can just use three of these pages to flip throught, i think it wouldnt be that difficult with their wrapper to have more so that you could have like one page per osc and one per filter etc... just my thought

edit: also the thing with the on/off buttons is easy. just enter a stepping of 127 in the rightmost box in the wrapper window. i just did that with an xml-editor and thought i was clever, now i see how easy that is...
sorry for asking such stupid things.

edit 2: you can also use two buttons for up/down, like for "select osc waveform". just assign two buttons to the same param and invert the "polarity" of one of them by switching 127 and 1

not a stupid question, but the answer was under your nose, you just needed to look!

and example two you don't even need to detune it all the way to 127 and 1, with the on/offs on an sL - 64-127 is all the same and 1-63 is all the same.

enjoy your remote, i freakin love it and swear by it!

but the on/off thing youre talking about refers to normal maps with #cc's and not to the automap-universal wrapper where you click on the crosshair, move a knob on the plugin, move a knob on the sl, ready. with the universal wrapper i didnt find an on/off setting.
do you make new presets for each instrument or do you use the wrapper?

i am also starting to love that thing despite of the 3-page limitation. before i got it i thought i could use the sliders for all 6 lfos or oscs in z3ta+

btw. a friends brought the sl from the us for me. it saved me over 180€ (245$) plus a free m-tron software... thats insane, what a rip-off here in germany

i'm talking about editing the SL on the actual unit, not with the wrapper. but you're right, that's the old school way of doing it.

what do you run for your DAW?

as for the VST's, i use my remote to play live a bunch of stuff so i have things mapped specifically for vst's i use live.

for studio use, it's just minor tweaks here and there. once you get use to it, the wrapper starts mapping a lot of instruments similarly and that makes your remote start feeling like a never ending hardware synth.

anyways if you come up with any cool templates let me know and we can exchange!

I' am primarily using it in ableton live. i didnt use the live mixer-mapping yet but i guess it will be usefull too. my prime itent was to use it for creating patches, thats why i am complaining about the 3page limitation as i would like to map as many params as possible. used to do that with behringer bcr2000 ending up with endless wallpapers assignments that i had to look up for each synth. i just made a quick mockup of an xml-editor for the wrapper presets with jaxfront but i found out that it is way more convenient to edit with the knobs and buttons on the unit. only reason that i thought they might just have limited the pages on the guy out of lazyness, so i just added some more pages with my homebrew-editor but unfortunately the wrapper just ignores them.
