FAO: Japanese Folk!

Hello People of Japan,

I would like to know what you call those 'gate/arches' that are made of wood that you see in the water.

Thanks!

Thanks, your image is what I was looking for, and a search for Torii on Wikipedia confirmed it

Toori?

It comes from the verb "tooru", which means "to cross/pass"

Edit: Oh, just read Jackon's reply... oh, well, this post is still useful to point out the fact that it's got two "o", rather than two "i"

Torii Gate, Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima is quite famous I think.

Planning to go to Kyoto the Autumn/winter, I can`t wait!

Is there a reason why you chose the write two "i"? This is the 3rd time I see an English speaker writing "toori" this way, and I'm beginning to wonder whether there is a phonological explanation behind it...
