When I look at the TA DJ Promotion Forums I see countless sets released a day, tons of views and no comments on many.(its not a whine on lack of reviwers do not worry). I tend to see some that post sets on a very frequent basis and when 25 new sets per day are posted many that sets that have recently come out get bumped to the 2nd page aka the land of no one is ever going to listen to them.

This is why I wanted to propose to you an idea that could help make the DJ forums cleaner and serve to promote yourselves better. It is simple instead of posting one thread everytime you post a set, what about creating one for the the DJ and updating it every time you have something new to promote.(ie post in the thread and edit/update the original post) Not only would this give sets more of a chance for reviews and exposure, but it would also help anyone who likes a certain DJ's style to be able to reference any previous works available by them for the offering. (also less threads mean more time on page 1)

This question isn't only about the DJ forums, as I have been thinking of releasing a set a week. I do not expect to get tons of listens as that is a staggering amount of material to go through, but i also do not want to create more than one thread to bump a few mixes down to page 2. Even if you guys do not want to do this , would you be adverse to it if I did it? I'm curious..as I am not trying to over promote, just share sets of whatever fresh stuff I might have at the time for the the small group of people on here that I know will listen. (I record anyway why not post)

With so many djs you're always going to be battling to keep your sets on page 1. Perhaps each dj could create index page for all their previous sets and keep adding new sets to that index (whether you create individual threads per set or not is your choice). People who like a certain dj could subscribe to their index and get notified of any new updates to that index.

Then a mod or someone could create a master index (similar to the DJs Tracklistings Archive in the tracklists/requests forum.

I wanted to suggest something that we as posters can do, noy give more work for the mods. As far as DJ's batteling to stay on page one, I don't think that will happen for too long. There are friends supporting a set and there are just people who over promote. The ones that over promote get the most bumpws, but no one listens. If no one listens does it matter what page you are on?

I had stopped taking chances by listening to mixes that were done by people I didn't know. A few times, it was simply because it was done by people who don't know wtf they are doing and thinking they are dj's by pitating ableton and putting together a fucking something a pig wouldn't roll in. I tried a few new names this week and was pleasently surprised. If a DJ has a thread with a few mixes that get responses it tells me I don't have to worry about hearing stuff that sounds like non stop trainwrecking. That encourages people to take chances...and listen.

If anyone thinks it would be a competition then let them.Simply anyone as stupid to think that having the highest thread on TA through bumping it makes them the best is ludicrous. I think the people serious about music would not abuse this, and those that would simply are not good enough to generate interest with their work...only by tapping themselevses on their shoulder and saying "I'm the best" while playing jams for their little sisters tea party.


short version: People will see through DJ's that blatently promote themselves and not listen. This new method will help TA's who might not have some level of popularity on other sections be discovered.

This wouldn't be a rule, but a way for people to have access to more than one of your sets. Read reviews on previous stuff and so on. It won't change TA, think of it as creating an onlint portfolio..no one HAS to do it.

Leaving feedback can be tough.

You download a set and add it to your collection. Often, the DJ name attached to the set has nothing to do with the forum name.

So a few days later you listen to the set and want a tracklist, but cant find the thread because theres no correlation between the thread and the name in the filename of the mix.

So what I do is have a 'Sets to download' file, and in that textfile I have the set name, where I am to download it from, and a link to the thread.

That way I can listen to the set, find the thread and write a quick review. Also I can easily find the tracklist and get the tracks I want.

Lets face it, if people listen to a mix, no matter how well structured and mixed, they arent going to spend time looking for the tracklist and a chance to review. People will ONLY look up your thread IF THEY WANT A TRACK IN THE MIX.

Heres a sample from the text file of some stuff I'm going through at the moment....

Some very good points. For me a review is just the icing on the cake, and if someone takes the time to give constructive criticism i enjoy it even better. I try to review a few mixes a week. I like doing them, no one expects them to be done in return.

This idead also came up when listening to Stu Cox's latest mix. I do not like Trance very much, and haven't been frequenting this section of the board for more than 6 months. ( admitedly due to releasing mixes again for myself, but at the same time i have made a few interesting discoveries and am glad to have expanded a bit on my musical tastes through them.) Stu's set really struck me a very creatively mixed piece. After listening to that one I started wondering what others he had. I could use the search function or ask him, buts lets be honest...A typical persons attention span is not very long. It is hard enough to get them to listen to an hour mix, and if they are willing to do more then why not have them available all in one conveniant place. You can't expect a listener to search you out or wait 5 days for a new link, because honestly the whim is gone by then. I seriously belive that using this as a system could work to help get more people interested in terms of listening and in terms of Dj's getting out there a bit more.

Its similar to beatport (shudders). Have you ever discovered a new producer through one track that struck you as brilliant? You enter his name into an artist search and it returns you every production he has ever done. Instead of only buying what you want you find others that interest you. The principle is the same. Even if the link to a mix is dead, I highly doubt any Dj on here would mind putting it back up. People taking interest is the most flattering thing I think for those of us who put up sets. I don't care if they don't write a review. The fact that they even listened is enough.

I personally will be doing this, and I hope it will not strike anyone as pretentious. I make alot(i've been told too much...but this isn't promo for me just something i really enjoy doing) I can point people to. These arent always people registered on TA, so through this they might be able to dicover more stuff from others that they might not have had they not if they didnt get pointed here. I hope this makes sense as the cofee hasn't hit yet. I'm not saying everything should change. People could do what they want. I just think that this could be a great way to make yourselves available to potential listeners. It is in no way a competition...let the idiots at DJ mag have those. This is only about ngetting more exposure to music that could use it. If someone listens to a set you did 6 months ago and likes it, are you not happy? With the old way they would have never listened.

I think its a good idea. I think its better to have one thread for each one of us and keep updating it when we make new stuff rather than making masses of threads.

Which is why I always format my mp3 filenames in the same way.

kr00t0n_-_Whatever_[September_2007].mp3

Person can then bung "kr00t0n whatever" into google and find the thread if needed.

I personaly not very fond of this idea.

There are many djs who create different sets. If one creates 3-4 progressive sets I will never click on it anymore and this way I could miss a different type of set that could be my next favourite.

I like it the way it is when the poster write the sub-genere of the set in the subject as well.

And I think it shouldn't be a competition about who is on the 1st page. It's just a bit childish. If I wish to see more posts, I can click on the other pages as well.

I voted no, but also do see the merits in such an approach. I think people releasing a lot of material may benefit more from this than others who put something out only every few months, but less forum clutter is always nice too.
