Review: EXPOSED w/ Luke Morrison
So I know, I am a part of this weekly event and some might take this as a lame spam offering, but whatever....... review time.
Once again Gregor (from bringthebeats) booked an artist who prior to the event I had never even heard of. I thought my knowledge of the scene, music, and dj's overall was pretty good - but this guy just knows how to dig for the undiscovered (very much like Carey did for Boa, Sonic - but more on the progressive tip).
Luke Morrison, who resides in Edmonton, has been running shit out west and in the process has developed a sound that he can truly call his own. I learned tonight that not only is he 25 years of age, but he's also knee deep in his academics, law school at that. Apparently him and Brad Copeland have had some pretty insane nights together both in Alberta and Ontario, and tonight proved to hold true to that trend.
I was slotted to play the opening slot once again for this night, and I couldn't be happier with the role I have been given. Theres nothing more rewarding for me than to lay down a proper set, and have the headliner thank me for setting the table for him to do his thing. I had picked up a lot of nice groovy techy gems, and just wanted to set a constant pace to build some momentum for Luke and Brad to take over and deliver the goods. At around 12:30, I dropped my last track, and Brad and Luke took over to unleash a gem of a back to back session.
Brad started things out as he usually does - steady, pumping prog, that instantly got the crowd moving. No longer than two tracks in, Luke plugs in his headphones and drops two of his own. This continued for a good hour or so, just constantly feeding off of each others tracks - all keeping a constant flow throughout, and had the crowd drooling the entire time. The thing I liked best about the chemistry between these two was the fact that they played the crowd to a tee. When it seemed the crowd was slowing down, a melodic track would be dropped. When it the crowd was ready for something a bit more pumping - one of them would answer the call. The back to back set was the most consistent display of a tag team set I have seen live. Seriously.
Place thinned out pretty good towards the end of the night, and with a solid group of 'heads' remaining, Luke played an encore - and the crowd responded with a warm applause of approval. A lot of people said it reminded them of Sonic, there were also quite a few people who said it reminded them of System. For me, it reminded me that there is still a large demand for this genre in the city, and that this will be a night were people will come to expect this type of quality.
Sorry for the extended write up, but it's pretty rare these days that I feel an event is worthy of this type of review. There were several TA's in attendance for this who I'm sure will agree with me.
The music for the entire night was recorded, and once previewed by the dj's we will decide whether it will be released. If it is, I'll post it in this thread. Also, I took some pretty great videos as well which I will post up too.
Good seeing Eug, Del, Ari, Sasha, tyson, daves, dan88, vickyvale (longtime!!) and forgive me if I have forgot to mention you. I hit the vodka soda's hard tonight. Still buzzing large.
