Where do you get feedback on your tracks?

When you have a track you want submit to record labels, where do you get feedback on it? I don't think you would want to post a 320k MP3 of the full song on the promotion forum, if you plan to release it. Potential labels probably wouldn't be too happy about that. Not to mention that you are setting yourself up for possible plagiarism. A short clip is pointless too, because in order to give a proper review, the whole song needs to be heard.

Do you all here have producer friends who will privately give you feedback on your tracks? Maybe your label gives you feedback. I've only dealt with one label so far, and they gave me no detailed feedback. It was a small label, and I assume the larger labels do critique submitted tracks.

I have a few producer friends, and I know a few DJs, but they don't give me detailed feedback, they just say "great track", or say nothing at all. I guess it's a matter of finding the right people, who are willing to listen to your tracks and give you a few critiques. This seems hard to find though. I wish there was a good way to "test market" tracks. I like feedback from casual listeners as well, nonproducers that is.

I have a myspace page. I guess I'm not really using it to it's full extent. Would it be considered too "spammy" to send a notice to all my "friends", informing them that I have a new track posted? Maybe mention that I welcome any comments they have about the track. I never considered doing that before. The fact that you can choose streaming only, is a good thing. No worries about the MP3 getting out. I might give this a try.

YOu could also crop up a sample with the intro, the hook, bit of the breakdown and post that. Seen it done a lot 'round here.

Well if you think of it as a market, I can see your problem.

Having your track signed to a small (especially digital) label will most likely mean less audience, than having your track freely available. Are those little bucks worth it? Not imo.

Having options is always a good thing. Having to listen to great tracks in crappy quality is not. But each to it's own.

The point isn't to "get out of your body", it's to bring awareness to your consciousness while you're experiencing another reality.

I hear ya. Sometimes I'd rather distribute 400 tracks for free than sell 20. An even bigger payoff, for me at least, is to get set time from DJs, be they up and comers, or major players. If they play your stuff, you know they like it, instant feedback. Maybe I should be thinking more about sending my tracks to DJs. I need to get my nerve up to do that though. If I could have marginal success as a freelance, labeless artist, I'd be fine with that. I think some of you here do that.

what i usually do is.

Render the track to 128kb quality or higher. Post it from intro to climax, and fade it down 16 bars after the climax hits.

so no 32 or 64 bar melody and outro. This way you still give people the impression about the mixdown quality and the way the track feels.

Outros are never special anyway, at least not with me

seriously are people this stupid? i've seen lot of big name artist have their full new unreleased track on myspace. everything you hear you can record, it doesn't mean the track is save if the download option is disabled. sure it's not exactly the same quality though, but still.

my common protocol on this subject:

Dont post it in a public forum ( full of noobs who have no idea what they're talking about)
this one qualifies.

Give the full track to close friends whom provide good feedback. Other producers, DJs, etc.

Play the track out live to test it out. If you dont dj or get gigs, give it to a dj friend to play it, and be there at the club when they play it.

well i guess you are right, but a track would have to be pretty good for someone to actually go through the trouble of doing that..shitty quality too...

uploading a short snippet containing the best part of your track in 96kbps mp3 is okay. even websites which sell the music do so.
