Cubase and sidechain?

I have been using Cubase SL2 for quite a long time now and I still donīt know how to use sidechain on anything. Can somebody explain it to me leaving out no details, please?

Iīm quite sick of trying to get my tracks as kicking as others without sidechain.. I always end up with mixes where the kick is simply too loud and it sounds very amateur I think.

I prefer Ableton for this, but to ask a person to describe everything to you isn't as good as you actually using google.

1/ open an audio stereo track, record a 4 to the floor kick and import it to the audio track!

2/ make a copy of the the kick track. this will be the signal..

3/ open up a midi track and add e.g v-station, this will be the bassline that will get the sidechaining effect.

4/ open up a stereo group channel and add the plugin sidechain compressor. on this channel select stereocombined panner and drag both stereochannels to the centre.

5/ route the signal kick to the group channel, balance the kick hard left.

6/ route the v-station/bassline to the group channel and balance the bassline hard right.

i use waves sc and in it u select key mode L>R...

thats it, the audio kick/signal triggers the sc which effects the bassline/v-station.

this is mono sidechaining for basslines so any stereo delay reverb will not sound as it should!

SL2?!
Way to keep up with the times man! haha

Ok, probably the easiest way for you is to use the db-audioware plugins. SL2 supports DX right? Alternatively, it's cheaper for you to just quit SL2 and start using Reaper ($40). Reaper has sidechaining, timestretching, and all the other mod cons built in.

Thanks for all your help!

I googled it too and found Sidekick. A great vst plug for this cause only.
And yeah I wish I had Cubase 4 but it costs like 300-400 euro I think.. Itīs just too much for some improvements to the work flow.

Never heard of Reaper..
