Hello! what kind of trance is it?

hey all.

i've been listening to trance for quite some time now, but i never got so into it to know everything there is about it. what i was hoping is for some advice, a bit of guidance as to what genre of trance i'm looking at when i name off the following tracks:
Mike Oldfield - Far Above the Clouds (Jam and Spoon Deep Inside Club Mix)
Kamaya Painters - Wasteland (Chubs Tribute)
Mara - One (Hamel Remix)

this style of trance seems to have deep or dark style ambience compared to the highs of traditional trance, and maybe even gothic at times. this style really intrigues me and i want to know more

Progressive trance. This dark sound is typical of late 90s/millennium progressive trance with acts like Bedrock, Tarantella vs Redanka, Tilt, Evolution, Chab, Quivver/Space Manoeuvres, Sasha, BT, Cass & Slide, Slacker, Van Bellen and many more. The Global Underground compilations from that period showcase quite a lot of this sort of music.

PS: the correct title of the Wasteland remix is "Chab's Tribute To Bedrock Remix"

yeah this style is more or less dead. however there are some tunes released now and then that resembles this kind of stuff. the closest thing you can find nowadays is progressive psy.

Almost anything touched by James Holden up till 2003 would fit this style. People I asked refered to it as progressive trance, but that genre envelopes a lot, so I used to call it deep trance or whatever, probably doesn't even exist

Ogenki Clinic - First Light
Roland Klinkenberg - Inner Laugh (James Holden Remix)
Mad Dogs - Better Make Room (James Holden Remix)
The Coffee Boys - The Touch (James Holden Remix)
Joshua Ryan - Pistolwhip (James Holden Remix)

and the list goes on

Also check out Moshics Essential Mix (23-02-2003), tracklist here. Driving and dark, excellent!

Actually there are progressive house and progressive breaks stuff that is similar but granted a bit more on the melodic or uplifting side, but still has some darker stuff. Lost Language still has some of this, and tracks on labels such as Baroque, Existence, No Smoking, Toes In The Sand, Proton and Tilth. You should be able to find similar stuff on there, in terms of feel.

That EM does look great. I'd love to get my hands on that. Bart Van Wissen - Distant Region is a severely underrated progressive trip.
