i run win2k, and havent yet seen a windows game that didnt run on it.
couple of things:
yeah, win2k is based on NT, but the problem with NT4 and games was that microsoft didnt provide anything but directx3 for NT4, thereby making it just about impossible to play games on NT4. 2k comes with directx6 (i think?) out of the box, so game compatability is increased.
nt/2k problems dont have anything to do with opengl. i would guess that NT got opengl support wayyy before mainstream windows (I believe NT3 already had some sort of support for opengl). opengl support has more to do with videocard drivers than the OS. also, not that many games require opengl. mostly just games based on quake2/quake3 engines.
win98 is not too slow for gaming. when you are playing a game, most of the processing power is spent on the game, and not in the OS. Thus, the choice of OS when it comes to gaming, is only a question of compatability between the OS and the game you want to play.
