Windows 2000 Gaming Problems

I no this should be in the Gaming forum but that forum seems quite a dead forum, everytime i go there only me is brousing, so ur just gona have to put up with it here

For all that run some branch of windows 2000, do u have trouble gaming? it may just be the retards at ea games, but since ive used windows 2000 professional over windows 98 SE, i havent been able to install need for speed III or need for speed high stakes! ive installed and ran total annihilation tho!

Are there anyways of fixing this? i no there are some 'compatabilty' updates and all them updates, and need for speed is even listed as fixed game, but they dont work.

Anyone managed to get around this ?

Win2k doesnt have Open Gl, well unless you have the very latest version, or you got the add on for it. Most games need open gl too run

This might help. But just get xp

Question Hmmmmm.

That's weird cuz I have Win 2000 Pro and I've played Half Life, Dune:Emperor, Unreal, Baldur's Gate etc, FF 7...no problems...I dunno why it's not working for you...it should at least install the games.

because windows 2000 is based on NT technology only some games work for it... it was purely design more as a networking OS than a leisure use as in gaming. you should just switch to XP they say gaming on there is pretty good. don't switch back to 98 because 98 is just too slow ME has way too many bugs.

hmm, that's weird. I can install Need for Speed III fine. You might want to try updating to Service pack 2.0 if you havent already. I've had 0 trouble with gaming. I've been able to install all my older CD games dating back to mid 90s up to current. In fact, Jedi Knight II runs very stable on my system.

as for this

I disagree. All the games that I have ran on Win98 work on Win 2000. Yes Win 2000 is based on NT technology, but it's not entirely NT. It's a cross of 98/NT. XP is decent for gaming. There's still a few quirks to work out of it though which is why i'm sticking with 2000. But it will be a while till I upgrade to XP since I also dont like its interface as much as I like Win 2000. As for Win98... Win98 ISNT too slow for gaming - it is one of the fastest. It's just unstable due to memory leaks and such which wont happen btw in Win2000 or XP.

i run win2k, and havent yet seen a windows game that didnt run on it.

couple of things:
yeah, win2k is based on NT, but the problem with NT4 and games was that microsoft didnt provide anything but directx3 for NT4, thereby making it just about impossible to play games on NT4. 2k comes with directx6 (i think?) out of the box, so game compatability is increased.

nt/2k problems dont have anything to do with opengl. i would guess that NT got opengl support wayyy before mainstream windows (I believe NT3 already had some sort of support for opengl). opengl support has more to do with videocard drivers than the OS. also, not that many games require opengl. mostly just games based on quake2/quake3 engines.

win98 is not too slow for gaming. when you are playing a game, most of the processing power is spent on the game, and not in the OS. Thus, the choice of OS when it comes to gaming, is only a question of compatability between the OS and the game you want to play.
