New Zealand digital artist Julian Oliver is working on a cool game that blends the electronic universe with the real world. His work-in-progress game called levelHead uses a series of cubes placed on a table top. Digital cameras and custom software sense the movements of the cubes and superimpose digital images of a tiny little 3-dimensional gameplay universe.

But the concept is awesome ! New more exciting games will follow.

levelHead is an interactive cube game cobbled together by Julian Oliver from New Zealand. The thrust of the idea is extremely simple - its internal software detects the cube's motion, where a set of digital cameras are then used to display an appropriate image depending on your current response. This means tilting the hexahedron in a certain manner will send the walker in the said direction, where the main aim of levelHead is to exit the virtual maze within. Looks like this could be the 21st century Rubik's Cube for kid worldwide, or they could look at it and think it too hard, preferring instead for mind-numbing shooters like Halo 3.

Are there screens on the cube toy, or do I have to point a camera accessory at the cube (which looks like it has images placed on it via mini blue/green screens) and play through a TV?

The screens are not on the cube. You need to point a camera at the cube so that an image processing algorithm can detect its motion in real time. This information is then used to generate the game on the computer screen.
