[Review] Gabriel & Dresden w/Jason Jollins @ Pacha, NYC [09-07-07]

I'll post a full review later. Might be the last time I see G&D.

Jollins impresses me more and more each time. I want a tracklist

Just got home... G+D spun a very different set this time. Can't say I enjoyed it as much. Of course, the big highlight was that amazing remix of Tracking Treasure Down. Anyways, more later... I have work in 4 hours :P

First and last time I see G&D. And the sound in that place is fucking horrible.

Great set though Jason.

I had a good time, Def want to know Jollins tracklist.

G+D had no set flow...but i mean they played some tight tracks, bunch of prydz, columbian soul....and many more i cannot remember atm.

I thought the crowd was great, wherever i was standing, everyone was really into the music...except for some shirtless fool in a cowboy hat dancing in the middle, that freaked me out just a tad...

So I actually went to G&D last night. First time seeing them since 2003. I went with an open mind and no expectations. I got there late, like 2:30 am, and stayed until the very end. I can see how some people might find their set difficult to 'follow' since it encompassed so many genres, but I found it very refreshing. They definitely have a unique sound. I was thoroughly impressed with the wide variety of music they played. Their set spanned nearly two decades of music ranging from New Wave to Progressive House to Trance to Techno. They played some classic tracks that I didn't think I've ever hear in a club again as well as some of my current favorites populating my playlist.

To give you a better idea, here is a short list of some of the tracks I can remember:

The Police - ?? (forgot which track)/ New Wave [1980-something?]
Nalin & Kane - Beachball / Progressive Trance [1997]
Beber & Tamra - Travelling on (possible just a sampling of the lyrics)/ Progressive House [2001]
Andain - Beautiful Things / Trance [2003]
Rachel Starr - Till There Was You / Trance [2005]
Gabriel & Dresden - Dust in the Wind / Progressive House [2006]
Gabriel & Dresden - Tracking Treasure Down / Progressive Trance [2006]
Claude von Stroke - Who's Afraid of Detroit / Techno [2006]
Dubfire - Roadkill / Tech House [2007]
Gregor Tresher - A Thousand Nights / Techno [2007]
Deadmau 5 - Faxing Berlin (Chris Lake Edit) *i think* / Progressive House [2007]

It takes a great deal of talent and creativity to spin a set like the one I heard last night. I'm not saying it was the best set I ever heard but it was certainly impressive to witness the way those two rise to a challenge and overcome it with ease.

The last time I heard G&D was that unforgettable night at Arc when they played As The Rush Comes and the entire club came together as one, singing the lyrics and swaying to the beat. The track was huge at the time & never before or since have I felt such an amazing vibe. It's still one of my most memorable clubbing moments. But back then they were far better producers than DJs and their mixing skills left something to be desired. Now, 4 years later, I can honestly say that their DJ skills left NOTHING to be desired.Their mixing was on point, and noticeably so, considering the beats they were matching. I can't imagine it's an easy feat switching genres frequently & seamlessly.

On a side note, I still hate Pacha and the heat was unbearable. The crowd, however, was quite nice. I was very pleased with all the fresh, young, smiling faces. G&D have a great group of fans that are a far cry from the jaded clubbers I'm used to partying with (including myself )

All in all, it was a really positive experience and I wanted to give credit where credit is due. They may not be my favorite DJs and their style isn't for everyone but I do believe they possess something very special & rare within the music industry. They don't conform or imitate; they resist and create. They are true artists in every sense of the word.

----
FYI:
It might seem strange that I've just randomly appeared out of nowhere with this G&D review. I haven't been frequenting the boards for quite some time and I rarely have time for a review, let alone a lengthy diatribe like this one. For some reason I felt compelled to write this. It's not because I've become a huge G&D fan; I may never see them again. I don't go out that often anymore and, when I do, it's usually to hear my fav dj. But last night I wanted to hear something/someone different. And that's what last night was; different. I'm always coming across negative reviews that I think are unfair or positive reviews that aren't credible or substantial. I usually just ignore them but this morning I couldn't do that. The fact is, whether you like Gabriel & Dresden or not, they deserve respect. Their talent is unmistakable and irrefutable.

WHEW! I'm done.

kthxbye

sunshine, nice review.
funny that it was hot in that place again.
i was happy there when i went to see Calderone
and they had an outside generator for extra A/C supply.
plus those cool-pumpin pipes made it easy to enjoy a 12 hour stay there.
I guess them bozo's went cheap'o for this event even though the place packs up every weekend. (and here i thought they started to do right by their costumers.)

damn, jay tore that shit up.. and in my opinion, g/d played so many good tracks but it was kind of all over the place. It would go from something peak hour track like Tiesto ft. Christian Burns - In the Dark, to some minimal/prog. I guess you can look at it and say that they tease in their set alot, or that its too much up and down.. to each its own i guess.

As i was streaming this yesterday, alot of people were hearing Jason for the first time and would come into the ETN chatroom to say they were all diggin his shit..huge props jay!

Josh told me that the sick remix of TTD (wippenberg 128mix) is going to be in their new 2 cd compilation that comes out on oct 23rd.
Holy shit was it fucking hot in there, i've never been to pacha and it get that! This was in the fucking booth too wtf.. in the crowd it was just ridiculous.. something must of happened lastnight with the A/C.

First off I want to apologize to Steven, Sheila, Tae, Luzz, and the rest of the SSU crew for leaving Rebel early to head over to the Pacha. One of Mike's friends wanted us to join them on their table so we decided to head over there and check it out with all intentions of returning back to Rebel at some point.....obviously that never happened.

I have said this before and I will say it again! G & D are talented producers but they absolutely SUCK as DJs. I could not believe the sorry excuse for a set they were playing. It was like snooze fest 2007. Every time they mix in a new track it's either a total buzz kill or another build-up track that normally gets played at 10pm....not 2am. They never build on what they create and totally go in the wrong direction. I can understand if people go out to see them just to hear their productions...OK fine but you can do that in your car, or your home, or work......but in a club.
They do absolutely nothing in the booth technical wise.....it seems to me their sets are prerecorded because they always look so effortless up there.....Dave touching a knob every few minutes while Josh plays around on the computer here and there.....wow what a show....sorry I'm not buying it. I really feel sorry for the people that dish out $$ hoping they will come around....but for those that do and actually have a good time, I can't hate on that. We left at like 2:30 and stopped to get some food on our way back to Rebel and I started feeling like shit so Mike took me home. Wish we would have just stayed at Rebel because I'm sure Luzz and the boys were ripping it proper.

Jason, you were amazing! Do you know you were the first dj I ever saw? And every time I've seen you, you are more and more awesome. I'm blown away every time Can't wait to see you again!!

I didn't really hear much of G&D's set, we left shortly after they came on and went to Rebel.
