when making a bookmark in internet explorer, the websites icon appears to the left side of the name...later on this gets changed to just an IE icon...how can you make the icon stay the same?

if u have an icon already on ur comp, u can right click the bookmark and go to the properties and change the icon from there.
but i know what you're talking about. i've had that happen to me before many times and i have no idea on how to make it stay. though since i've started using IE7, it's been pretty consistent in keeping the icon of the website there.

the favicon usually disappears after a while in IE6... what i do is save the favicons and edit each bookmark to use the local file...
a site's favicon is usually found at "http://www.site.com/favicon.ico" ... so the favicon for yahoo! would be, http://www.yahoo.com/favicon.ico

these are usually stored on your comp. as Temp. Internet Files and if you have you comp./browser to auto. erase all personal info. when closing the browser, or if you manually run Disk Cleanup or empty your cookies...it'll usually erase the icons. FF doesn't have that problem though
