The gym isn't really that big. Its all built around a standard sized basket ball court. They are making barriers (like closing rafter type things) that are going to cut 1/4 from each side of the court, turning the dance floor into 1/2 a basketball court.
So far, midwest audio (the company who is looking at all this) has sent us a proposal for $8,500 which includes speakers, monitors, and outdoor speaker for people outside the 'club', wireless mics, wiring, the Numark iDJ2, and a video projector with an S vid cable (the video idea has been tossed around, but the staff member who is planning all this doesn't realize you would probably need someone to VJ with that sort of thing).
Another thing, they don't want to buy used.
So yeah, were looking at a budget of around $8k, but do you think it would be worth advising them to buy cdj800's and a djm600 or something of the like, if it is only me who will be djing on this stuff? As much as i'd love to, I don't know whether or not all this will work for students once I graduate

There's going to be alcohol allowed. We're building a 'removable bar' with third party catering. 21 year olds can drink, but like any other school event, they're going to be watching all the minors. It's cool though, because we are the only wet campus in the state.
Anyway back to this. I think what I'm going to do is look into the cdj800, or at least 200's. I'm not going to be doing this every night, but probably on a weekly or biweekly basis, plus any events that frats or sororities want to throw.
I think this could be the start of something big, IF we could get it to work. This has gotta be planned to the T and make sure no one ignorant about all this shit starts being dumb about it.

2. Crown 475w split speaker amplifier
3. Four 200w Yamaha speakers

I use more sound than that for houseparties, FFS. What do they think this is, a quiet zone?? Where's the bass?
This is a gym, so high ceilings, right?
Personally, if they are recommending low end yamaha speakers, an amp that won't even drive them well and an iDJ, you're dealing with the wrong people. Especially at that sort of cost range.
Afterthought: maybe you mean 475w/channel, like the CDi2000? That'd atleast drive the speakers. But still.. where's the bass
Good sound is a must
As far as the DJ gear, CDJ800s/DJM800 is _alot_ of money. I'd consider CDJ200s and a more modest but flexible mixer, put the money you saved into some lights. Consider the overall effect of the environment, not any one singular piece. Forget the projector, visuals are a whole can or worms... then you get to deal with a VDJ, computer setup to run it, bulbs to burn out, etc. blah blah. stick with some good lights.
