depends on what you plan to use it for.

for quality "storage" hd... i'd go Lacie or Kanguru

for extra-quality "recording" disk... i'd go Fantom

I got the Lacie. Thing is, it sounds like a jet once in a while. Also get the firewire version, might work better then the lonely USB 2.0

glyphs are sweet, the warranty is awesome...

i just bought one of these

WD Mybook pro 500 gb usb2, firewire400/800

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...rd_i=B000EXTXSI

looks amazing so far and the 3 year warranty is nice... got it for like 280 tax in at microbytes

was one of the times where it sucked to be in canada

would saved like 100 bucks on it in the us

oh well, its one of the few with the triple interface and is still cheaper than the la cie which goes for 290 at my school's store

about defrag: yes like any other hard drives, once in a while helps alot.

Lacie is used by most professionals, might be a good indication of quality.

luke wat kinda of uses will you be doing with it?
ive been using a maxtor 200gb with 7200rpm in a acomdata for a year now, about 3 times a week with serato, in hot humid and VERY loud environments and thank god (knock on wood 12 times) hast faild on me yet
its very fast, aluminium casing

i also recently bought the lacie usb 2.0 500 gigger that they had on sale at future shop(120$), to my suprise when i opened it it was plastic, i think ill keep it for home backup (clone copy of my external once a week) and not bring it out to the clubs.
when the one i use fails ill just replace it with another internal

i now own over 1.7 terabytes of harddrive space lol.
2x500 gig satas on my desktop + 1x500 gig lacie + 200 gig maxtor external

I went the DIY route... my main drive is a 500gb Seagate Barracuda ES in a Kingwin Jet enclosure which has a fan and aluminum casing and should deal with heat quite well. The total cost was around $170 or so. Pretty sweet.

I sell the seagates freeagents and mybooks alot at work, they actually have a higher than usual defective rate, especially the mybooks, wich in my opinion are pure shit. They pre install a whole bunch of garbage software that can run into compatibility isues if using with other, more powerfull backup software.
But for any kind of pro work, sound or otherwise, its really worth it to invest alitle bit more for the reliability of a Lacie.
For sound work you want a fast drive, 7200 rpm is a must if your storing songs or samples that are loaded into ram of a program like ableton or torq, any less and you might run into lateancy isues. Another inportant thing to concider is the interface you are using. USB has a data transfer rate of 470 mbps, firewire 400 is 400 mbps but has a much higher bandwith making it a better choice for live triggering of samples. If you own a macbook pro then you have firewire 800 riding at 800 mbps and that obvious the better choice. The best however is esata, you can now buy pcmcia and express cards that give you esata wich rides a 3 gbps, over 3 times the speed of firewire 800. In that case you can buy a RE edition Western Digital wich are more reliable than the standard and an enclosure with esata (like 50$) and your all set.

Might be helpfull if we knew what you are using it for exactly
