ps3 is 599 (soon to be 499)
Hd-DVD players still 500-600
Xbox 360 HD addon - 200 (but crippled due to lack of HDMI - 1080p over componet = not so good)
Hybird player? 2500. Even then it's not truly hybrid, it has troubles playing HD-DVDs.
Movies? Equally 25-35.

Let's fucking get ONE format and then work on that. Only that will never happen.

Well, if it makes anyone feel better - we will inevitably end up with one format over the other just as with VHS and Beta.

As I've said countless times before, I'd put my money on HD-DVD over Blue Ray, any day.

The porn Industry announced that they will be going with HD. This is a huge jump for HD. If you remember correctly this was the deciding factor between the VHS/Betamax war in the 80's.

The problem with Blue ray is the amount of actual machines to burn the discs.

Disney signed an agreement with the people that make their discs that they will never record PORN, and a Disney movie in the same studio, because of the infamous mixup in one of their movies in the late 70's.

This news also says that there are WAY MORE HD units that make the discs, this will allow the Video companies to come out with discs faster to market, and at a way cheaper production.

Thus IMO HD is the winner. It just has not been declared yet.

But Blu-Ray sales are better. And more studio's are supporting Blu-Ray. Companies that are exclusively supporting HD were bribed to do so, and its only a timed exclusivity. Also, porn does not play as big of a role during this format war. Back in the BETA vs. VHS days, the only way to GET porn was via VHS. Now, you can get porn on the internet, DVD, on your TV, yada, yada, yada...the fact that HD has it isnt as big a factor as one might think.

Also, I found this interesting.

On Sony refusing porn on Blu-Ray:

"The answer is that it hasn’t. Once you get past the sensationalist headlines, there’s more to it. Big-time porn studio Vivid has announced its first Blu-ray porn movie, so there’s obviously a leak somewhere in the Blu-ray condom. Even the Blu-ray disc Association has reacted quickly by saying there is no ban against adult movie content."

Cheaper HD-DVD players will play a part, but also the PS3 including Blu-Ray is a factor as well. Okay, so the PS3 isnt exactly dominating, but 4 million units sold is still heads and shoulders above anything the HD-DVD camp has to offer. And that statistic is only PS3's, I dont have numbers on standalone Blu-Ray players, which obviously will bump that number even higher.

But for the love of god, can these people just choose one or the other?

Do you have the numbers to back that up? I had read somewhere recently (though I can 't recall where) that HD-DVD was already in near double the households that Blu-Ray players are.

But then again, I don't have any citations either - so grain, salt, etc.

Here's why you probably heard that. In terms of standalone players, HD-DVD IS selling better than Blu-ray players. But, in terms of actual Blu-Ray DISCS vs. HD-DVD DISCS, Blu-ray is currently winning. This is 100% because of the PS3. About a year ago Blu-Ray players were over $1000, while HD-DVD started at around $499.99. Now, Blu-Ray players can be found for $499.99 and HD-DVD is probably between $200 and $300.

And beyond that - all this dilly-dallying by companies saying they're "Blu Ray/HD DVD exclusive" is a load of shit that will last, at most, a year or two, until one format is the clear winner and companies are essentially forced into using it or not making any money.

You really think so? Even if the player itself is selling better, wouldnt you think companies would judge the better format by which SOFTWARE is selling better rather than which PLAYER? Thats just my perspective...I think Sony made the right move by including Blu-Ray with the PS3, because it practically forces the format down consumer's throats, which is exactly what movie studios and game developers want.

Obviously it doesnt play benefit for the consumers themselves, since we inevitably have to pay more (Blu-Ray is the sole reason why the PS3 was more expensive than its competition), but it works for the Blu-Ray cause in terms of who's going to win this so called format war.


And yes, the exclusive bullshit is just both of the sides trying to pull the rest of the crew over to their decision. By 2009, one or the other will have the majority and the "exclusive" deals with disappear.
