I don't know about other states, but at least in Florida you get points against your license if you get a ticket. If you go to an attorney, you pay them the $100 and you get no points.
And yes, work zones usually cost a lot more.
To be honest, I really don't know wtf the attorney does. I thought I had a decent argument when I got a ticket for running a red light, and I was about to tell the attorney what happened and he was pretty much like, "don't worry about that, just fax me the ticket and give me your cc number."
Next thing I know I get a letter saying that the ticket was removed.
