Essential Mix: Looking for fans to take part in a Q&A

Are you an Essential Mix fan? Do you never miss a show?

I am a Senior Producer at a company called Somethin Else, we produce the Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1.

I am looking for EM fans to complete a short questionnaire about the programme and dance music in general.

If you are interested please e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanks

Is there ever any hope of high quality DAT rips of all EMs being issued?

re high quality rips. As with everything music related the rights issues involved in making mixes available after broadcast (either as a download, podcast or as a commercially available CD) are incredibly complex.

The basic issue is that we don't own the copyright to the music featured on the Essential Mix, the producers and record labels do.

Currently the BBC is allowed to, via an agreement with the record industry, stream its output for seven days after broadcast. That is effectively how the BBC's 'Listen Again' Radio Player came into being, (see bbc.co.uk).

We would of course like go further and make our music programmes available as a high quality download or podcast. But until broadcasters and record lables can agree a way of making sure artists and labels get their dues from downloads it will be difficult for programmes like the Essential Mix to be made available in that way.

There are exceptions such as playing 30 second clips of music, or featuring only unsigned music. But I'm not sure either works for The Essential Mix.

What do you think?

I think that the point of being stuck by the copyright issue is and will always be the stumbling block to that. Obviously if some of the labels featured got together & sorted something out it would be nice, but I'd say it's doubtful.

Out of interest, do you actually have the whole backlog of DATs, or just keep so many?

Yes just a word of advice, back them up somewhere and NEVER EVER DELETE OR REMOVE THEM

I know the rights can be really awkward but if there ever is anyway you can get the classics (especially early ones) out in high quality it would be worth one hell of a lot to the whole scene

I'd have to say that tony de vit's mix from jan 1995 would go down well again But if you're going to do the oakenfold world tours from 1999, play the lot!

I really hope you rebroadcast Man With No Name's EM from Sunday 26th July, 1998. That set is a corker. Many have heard about it but few have actually heard it. It also catches a lost moment in the history of trance music. I would be really thankful if that particular set would be rebroadcasted.
