[Review] DT @ Pacha
Whew... wasn't planning on coming out of hibernation just yet, but I was barhopping down on St. Mark's w/ a friend and he insisted we go to Pacha as soon as he heard there was to be a Halloween party. So at about midnight we hit the club and start rocking out immediately. I've never seen DT in my life (I've always missed his frequent NYC parties for one reason or another), and I was impressed by his style. Though I'm certain most of you are very familiar with Tenaglia's DJ booth antics and thus I'm preaching to the choir, but I was really impressed by his showmanship. He had two high-powered reflector lights and a mirror, and he used these to add nicely to the effects (interestingly enough, I didn't actually see an effects guy up there, so maybe DT was running the whole show). And I'm sorry, but his discoball reflector pants were quite possibly the coolest pants that I have ever seen. There was even a point in the night when he climbed up onto the edge of the booth over the audience and was shining the hand held lights on the pants, the effect of which was a brilliant nimbus of light that flooded the audience.
Right, on to the music. What I heard of the set (I left around 4:30 b/c I had a bunch of shit to do today) was absolutely perfect for Halloween. Lots of dark and dirty beats with distorted voice-overs saying some creepy ass shit. DT even picked up a microphone a couple of times and did his own vocals (even creepier distortions on that) that rumbled over the dancefloor. He also played a few upbeat party tracks (especially at the beginning) that melded nicely into the darker stuff. I've heard a great many people slam DJs for playing songs from different subgenres right next to eachother, but Danny did it really well. The funkier beats fit smoothly with the darker tribal, something that captures the feel of Halloween (it's dark and creepy, but it's really a party holiday once you get down to it).
Overall: A long night of tribal was never my thing, but I had a lot of fun last night. The beat got so dark and techy at times that I was gritting my teeth while dancing, and that's a good indicator of a good party (a physical response to the mental stimulation of the music).
So I just listened to one of Jason's main sets from down in Argentina, and I'm getting pumped for Friday @ Pacha. Hope to see some of you guys there (I'm afraid I couldn't find any TAs on the floor last night, and I didn't get into VIP to check there).
