Recording hardware/PC issue :(

I am having trouble recording my mixes onto my laptop. Here is my setup:

2 x CDJ200
Numark DXM06 Mixer

I'm using a standard RCA cable to go from my mixer to a RCA > 1/8" Mono adapter, which is fed into my laptop's Mic-In port.

Whenever I go to record a mix, in random points in the mix I hear what sounds like a speaker 'pop'. The waveform on my recording program clearly shows something is going on:

I thought that the grounding on the power adapter might be causing the problem, but after trying multiple outlets in multiple homes and apartments, I ruled that possibility out. I tried using a different cable and cables of different lengths, but that didn't work. I tried unplugging the power adapter and just running off of the laptop battery, but I'm still getting that sound! This sound issue came up with both mixers (the Ion and now the Numark), so I don't think I need to return anything...

Please help me figure out what I need to do here. I can't record a demo until I get this fixed

If you have the right software for your sound card you can sometimes change it from mic in to line in. have a look.. maybe in manual if you still have it.
i know on my dell inspiron 6400 it gives me the option whenever i plug something into the mic in.
if thats the case just change it.

other then that, pick up a cheap external usb sound card. probably find one for $50 ish depending where you look.

yes, get a proper external sound card and stop fiddling with mic inputs and crappy laptop sound cards. you might have to get a ground loop isolator also, if you get some kind of hum in the sound when the computer is plugged into the wall. but they're not expensive.
i myself got a sound card with balanced inputs because i don't have a laptop and my computer is about 20 meters away from my mixer, so there was too much interference on the rca cables.
but on short distances rca will do fine.
i had the edirol ua-1ex before i got an alesis io|2, which has balanced inputs. and i can recommend the edirol, great sound quality, no problems with it at all.

That Edirol USB device looks just like what I need. Thanks

Are there any other recommendations for USB sound cards that will do the trick?

I looked around Cool Edit and could not find a way to change my input from Mic-in to Line-in. I also looked around the Device Manager for those settings to no avail. I'll try using Audacity in the meantime, since I know that it will allow me to switch those settings easily.
