Some of this is funny, some of it is silly. I appreciate a DJ, among other reasons, because 1) he/she has spun records that I enjoy when I have seen him/her live and 2) he/she has demonstrated an appreciation for the fans by interacting with the crowd and acting friendly during one-on-one chats with the party-goers. I don't believe that the average person blindly follows certain DJs; rather, there are likely appropriate/defensible reasons that one develops an appreciation for a DJ in the first place (and even in situations where I've heard people say, for instance, "we have to go to this event b/c Tiesto is spinning" in all likelihood I think what they mean is not that Tiesto is a god who deserves to be worshiped but that he is worth seeing because, for example, his tune selection during shows tends to be top-notch).

I also think something has to be said about the suggestion that some individuals may understand a DJ to be the vehicle through which amazing music is delivered during an event and, so, a connection between such music and the one who presents it naturally develops and leads to liking that particular artist.

Granted, I dislike when people take their appreciation too far, but I disagree with the overall argument in this link...it makes no sense. Its saying I'm supposed to go to a restaurant for the good food but to not appreciate and develop a liking for the chef that makes it. The two are inextricably linked.

if you take a dj like tiesto for example, and throw in all the arguments such as you hate his track selection, he cant mix, blah blah blah whatever

its all really irrelevant, because first of all, enoguh people obviously enjoy the music he spins so its not a question of spinning good or bad music

when tiesto comes, you know the party is gonna be off the hook, and thats all that really matters, not what tracks he plays or whatever, just the fact that everyone in the room is gonna be going way crazier then if it was another dj dropping the exact same set. its just the psychology of the party goers. personally i think that without superstar djs we would all get pretty bored of never getting super exited and just hearing really good music all the time....


anyways if you disagree with that i guess you could say thats the difference between the mindset of a edm enthusiast vs a clubber just going out to having a fucking great time! one looks for the music while the other looks for the atmosphere


you could say that music is what makes the atmosphere, but that argument doesnt fly for me

bahahha. You're the trancecracker Ish was talking about. His entire point was that you should be able to enjoy good music without needing to attach it to some superstar DJ.

i fully agree with this statement however its pretty black and white thinking and beacsue of that you woudl end up validating a statement such as


"everyone enjoys (insert any track) to the same extent whether they are at home listening to it on their computer, out at an empty club with an amazing dj (not a superstar), or at the one party (with a superstar dj) everyone devotes their energy too because they cant go out every week to see each and every dj.


i think its pretty obvious that this is not the case, most people dont need a supestar dj to enjoy good music, its not like they dont like it at all without the dj. the point is that they enjoy it more in this situation.

There is one significant difference between a packed club with a superstar DJ, an empty club, and home listening - the crowd, and not the superstar DJ. The point here is that there should be no difference in your enjoyment of good music regardless of who is behind the decks provided all other things equal. Ish's criticism is that people collectively started feeling like they need to see Tiesto's mug behind the decks in order to enjoy the music being spun.

P.S. There's not a doubt in my mind about that.
