Mark Thornton's Theme For The Starcrossed Lovers... real orchestra???

Just curious, did Mark create this song in part by hiring an orchestra to record the breakdown? Or is it possible to do this with high-quality samples/VSTi's???

It's taken directly from Craig Armstrong's "Balcony Scene" written for the film Romeo and Juliet.

Mark's remix is pretty cheap sounding tbh, weak percussion and the whole tune seems to lack substance. The breakdown makes up for it big time though, and he did do a good job there. So all is forgiven.

I was really curious about this last summer so I did some research and I found the same thing. I think the part of the track that I like the most is the orchestral part. It's not a bad trance track but it's definitely one of the more hyper-melodic, end of a set type tracks.

^ yeah, too bad the production is pretty weak on the rest of it. His synths drive, but his beats and bass leave the track feeling half assed, imagine an old skool alex morph remix of this! :O:O:O

Yeah but I think it's a nice change of pace. I like bass, but I really prefer the melodies (why I've gravitated towards less bass, less dance orientated melodic electronic/acoustic stuff).

I don't think every track should have this pounding bass in it...after all trance isn't the same as say techno, breaks, drum n' bass etc..where obviously the presence of a driving bass (and a good bass-line at that) is more important than a euphoric melody.

It's a pretty standard, average trance track and there are better, but like I said..it serves it's purpose as either a bridge from slower music, could even be used as an intro (if you start from the ochestral breakdown) and definitely a good end piece.

I appologise, I've not made it clear.

I am with you 100% man, I live for melody. And that breakdown is possibly the best I've ever heard. But I feel that with nice tight percussion and a solid deep bass it would make the track perfect.

Think something like "POS - Remember" but with that breakdown.

Tell me that isn't what you wanna hear as you cross the threshold to the afterlife.

is it possible with some of the best samples/VSTi's of orchestral instruments, that you could put something together that sounded somewhat like a live recorded classical piece?

Hmmm, theoretically yes. But it would be fuck hard to do, just listen to the depth of those strings.

Takes years to score and play like that.

Also,

if you liked that, check out Maurice - Feline.

Very very good track.

Yes, you just need a good sample library. There are amazing sounding libraries with incredible fidelity. What then becomes important to make it sound authentic is to write and program the music like it would be written for an orchestra, which requires som knowledge of how an orchestra actually behaves.
