its been around for quite some time now, but is moving at a snail pace into the consumer market. How long before having a 64bit operating system becomes standard, for even the home user?

well since the desktop marketshare is basically windows.
64bit goes mainstream when microsoft decides to stop supporting 32bit.
last i heard, it was the next OS that microsoft will release, but i havent read about IT stuff in the last 4 months since im vacation.
either way, microsoft push 64bit whenever they want. they control that.

Is there any point for the home market? We already are not using all the computing power given to us by the manufacturers, why bother doubling the data rate?
64bit, dual core, dual channel, why not just keep computing power the same and cut power usage in half?

64 bit is needed to go beyond 3gigs of RAM, and yes we're slowly getting at the point where its needed for the home.
HDTV enabled home pcs, media centers, 3d application interfaces, etc etc.

exactly...the ram limit is pissing me off with xp 32bit...but i'm not motivated to upgrade to 64bit because of all the stability issues.

What stability issues?
I use XP Pro 64 on a daily basis and I see no point in using 32 anymore. Vista 64 is where the problems arise...
