vst plug-ins with cubase, need help

I'm just trying to get my head round Cubase SX3,, I need to know how to add plug-ins to the inserts of a Midi track such as compressors or filters etc.. If I add an Audio track I can click on one of the inserts on the left and add any of my plug-ins to it but if I try on a midi track I just get a list of built in ones.. Is this possible to do? Hope someone can help, its driving me nuts..

Doesn't cubase sx 3 have separated midi and audio channels? SX1 and SX2 did. Not sure about 3 though. It's really is easy if you actually have the manual .

If cubase sx3 still has midi and audio split than it's the following you'd need to do:

The midi channel triggers the sound which is then forwarded to the audio channel which generates the audio from the vst plug. These audio channels can be found in the mixer (F3). Try some of the select buttons to view the audio channels if they're not there.

this is how i do it.....

add midi track, goto vst instruments select your required vst eg. v-station.

draw in or record your melodies etc etc

go to mixer one, the track where it says v-station, just above the volume slider there is a little arrow if you select that then it will display panner, inserts, sends etc etc.

select inserts then it will show your 8 free spaces where you can add your chosen instrument.

Cubase 4 doesn't have the separated midi and audio channels any more.

I don't know, a fanatic cubase-using friend told me. So I guess it's true

I'm using Cubase 4.1 and it definitely still has separate MIDI and audio tracks. But it's no problem, you can group them in any way that suits you. Cubase is great for arranging things into folders/ groups and maintaining an overview.
