upset (strikes related!)
hey everyone
i know i dont post and barely come around these days well busy as everyone
but i dunno i came here to express my anger maybe it would be interesting to get the point of view of you guys , since u are like exterior to this whole situation
usually strikes dont bother me that much , strikes in this country it's like a tradition , or at least something we are used to .....!
i always considered as an important right the possibility to express opinions , agreement or disagreement....
but now seeing for the first time ever in my student life , my university is getting blocked by a minority of people who are against a new law which has been voted by our parlement concerning the future and progressive autonomy of french universities and by the entry of private funds in the budget given to each university with some public funds still....
a lot of people disagree with this law arguing it will lead to a situation comparable at the one in UK or US where the fees and costs are expensive , and the survival of a couple of big and powerful universities , and the death of small and uncompetitives ones.
Im in favor of this law since the current system doesnt function anymore and the lack of material way is getting a problem but it's not even the question
to see that the universities in this country are slowly taken in hostage par some students thinking the only way to make things change and to get rid off of this law is to block the uni is making me very upset because it deprives us of the right to access to our courses and tutorials , especially the way these decisions are taken in a non democratic way by some extremist people.....
i dunno does it ever happened at your uni? any experiences?!
i really pray that the situation will be back to normal soon , if most of the uni are used to be blocked and try to handle the bad consequences it lead to
i would have never imagined my law school would follow the same way , we are usually against this way of action and anyway generally speaking dont like to mix up politic and studies though people have their ideas
there is nothing like a molotov cocktail to show your support.

I wouldn't argue with you on the strike in the unis. You have your opinion, and I understand the idea is to get some exterior views on this.
It's just the whole "taken hostage" thing that made me react, I do not understand how such an over-the-top cliché has become the catchphrase for every strike in this country.

Strikes are the proverbial "double edged sword" - they're existence is both absolutely necessary (they give the "working" public a voice) and yet potentially socially devastating.
I don't know much (or anything really) about the situation you're dealing with in France right now Marie, but I guess if there's any "silver lining" to try and find it's that at the very least you live in a country where people are free to express dissent in such a manner.

The first thing I learnt at university is that you shouldn't let it ruin your studies.
Strikes are awfully common here, as they happen almost every year. I guess I got used to them, and just study at home whenever I can't go to the library.

I know it isn't the main point of your post, but I would argue that the university system in the US is extremely competitive. In the old days it didn't mean anything unless you had a Harvard degree, but now there are over 2200 accredited colleges and universities where you can get a very quality education, and countless other community colleges where you can further your studies as well. Sure we still have the "big name" elitist schools, but the difference between an education there and an education at any of the hundreds of small liberal arts schools scattered across the country is becoming negligible.

i was in high school when all the teachers in bc went on strike... not everyone agreed with it but we still had no classes for like 3 days or longer, i cant remember.
It was pretty crazy though, because it created a lot of tension between the people who agreed and disagreed.. it was annoying at school when we got back. but that's life i guess
another thing that affected me when there was strikes was 1) the bus driver strike - no buses for 3 months... ANY buses.
2) the garbage men strike - no garbage pick up for 3 months... it was so annoying....
that sucks though that they're obscuring your way into education just because THEY don't agree... but i guess they have to prove their point somehow
p.s. have you read the book "a year in merde"? it's an awesome book about a brit that goes to france lol. oh man.
You know, France reminds me so much of Brazil (university strikes included). Well, except for the food, I like our cheese better

to marcus - ah well i cant say im a big fan of the cheese sooo
and yeah i guess these strikes are just the reflection of a delusionned attitude of the youth and especially students towards the current economic and politic situation
but i think there are more efficient ways to express this rather than blocking uni no more courses but at the end the finals and exams will remain so it's tricky and bad for us at the end
but anyway i'll see tomorrow if it's re open or not
