3am lockout trial for Sydney
Anyone been following this?
| quote: | It’s been labeled by the NSW Police Force as a way of reducing alcohol-related crime in the city, and for six months the trial will see a 3am lockout in place on the weekends. There’s a statewide 3am lockout in Queensland, could Sydney be next?
The six-month trial will see glassware removed from licensed premises after 11pm, as well as a 3am lockout in place on the weekends: which means patrons inside the premises are able to remain, but those seeking entry after 3am will be turned away. It’ll be voluntary for licensed premises in the city with a focus on George Street in particular, and premises taking part in the trial will include hotels, karaoke bars, restaurants and of course, nightclubs. The NSW Police claim a high number of venues have agreed to take part, with the lockouts already in place at some premises.
“It has been identified that 3am onwards in the area on weekends is a peak time for alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour with groups of often intoxicated people moving between licensed premises,” it was claimed in a statement from the NSW Police. “It is hoped that the lock-out strategy will reduce this behaviour.”
While from the outset it may not seem like an unreasonable concept to many people, the trial has certainly ruffled feathers in the Sydney clubbing community. It was only last year that the Queensland Parliament extended the 3am lockout that was trialed in Brisbane to the whole of the state, and some of the criticisms leveled at the move are that’s it’s merely a ‘band-aid’ solution that doesn’t treat the underlying issues that cause the violence in the first place. It’s also been slammed for hurting the bottom line of nightclubs that trade on a late-night clientele, leading to job losses in the industry.
And that’s not to mention the restrictions on civil liberties of the punters themselves. Your right to ‘club-hop’ across venues to catch different acts has been limited to your last stop at 3am; you’re no longer permitted to go outside for a smoke; and you also won’t be permitted to enter a venue to use the toilets, for example. It’s also seen by some as a threat to the safety of clubbers: if you inadvertently go outside, only to discover on your return that it’s now past 3am, you can’t get back inside to rejoin your friends and you’re left to fend for yourself on the city streets. |

Punishing all for the actions of a few is never a good approach, imho.
