Can a virus eff up your audio card?

My audio card has gone wacky. When I plug it in I get a high pitched hum. I was using Cubase and all of a sudden go this message

"ASIO Multimedia Driver

Device: SB X Fi Audio [1040]
Errorcode: FE7-D-0013

Info
Sorry, communication with the Audio Card had been lost. Please select Reset Devices in the Options Menu or try restarting Cubase or Windows."

I've troubleshot this like a wild wild west flick.
Everything in my control panel says the audio card device is working. I took out the card and uninstalled the drivers. then started from scratch....still not working.

about half hour/hour before I had that notice my virus scanner found something, and that was the only thing that was abnormal before the audio card stoped working.

Is it possible for a virus to destroy my audio card? I'm gonna try it in another computer tomorrow o see if it's the card.

any suggestions what it could be?

It is more likely that the virus is corrupting the drivers and other necessary drivers/software. Clean up that virus, then try again. It's very very rare that a virus can physically damage a piece of hardware, and usually it's something with moving parts, like a hard drive, cd-rom drive, or floppy drive.
