from the phono output of your left turntable to the phono input on the 2nd channel and from the phono output of your right turntable to the phono phono input on the 3rd channel. you could alternatively use the line outputs and connect those to the line inputs. don't use the s/pdif outputs for anything. now if you've connected the turntables to the phono inputs make sure you select phono on the flip switches on top of the mixer right under where it says channel 2 & channel 3. if you connected the turntables using the line outputs and inputs, select line from the flip swtiches. also i have no idea what the phono/line buttons on the back of the vmx300 are for, but if you get no sound then i suggest trying what happens if you press them.
and you do know how to connect rca cables, right? red on red (right channel) and black/white on black/white (left channel) to get both the left and right channel (stereo sound) from each deck. also this configuration is good when you want to use the crossfader as the vmx300 seems to fade only between the 2nd and the 3rd channel.
when you want to hear both channels play simultaneously you should have the crossfader in the middle and the upfaders for both of those channels up. from there, you can select which channel plays, 2nd or 3rd by using the crossfader or the upfaders.
also check that the eq's are at 0dB and the main out is not set to the min position. also the gains should not be at min for you to get sound. you should set them so that the channel level meters are peaking at 0dB (staying in the green). if you want to listen to some channel thru the phones you should press that channel's pfl button. also i'm not entirely sure what the talk on button does, but it might lower the music so you can talk in the mic, so make sure that it isn't pressed. also the surround button i think is worthless, so make sure it isn't pressed either.
if you don't get it to work with these instructions then there's a good probability that something is fucked up.
