Ableton: MIDI related question

Hi guys

ive borrowed a MIDI keyboard (M-Audio Oxygen 8) off a mate to use with Ableton Live, ive hooked it up fine, i press a key, a note plays deduced by what i have on the synth in that midi track.

but my question is..........How do i set it up so that when i play a note on the keyboard, a corresponding midi note is made in a clip?

i basically want to play a melody on the keyboard and then fidle about with the recorded midi notes in the clip afterwards.

i have seen this been done, i have checked the manual and various websites, but found nothing usefull.

Cheers for the help

it wasnt when i was trying to get it to work, but even when it is recording, it doesnt record any MIDI notes, nor the actual audio coming from the midi track, i think i would have to send it to an audio channel to record the audio, but its the midi notes im looking for

AH HA!

victory is mine. i found out how. its that simple its almost embarassing. Its the button next to the channel fader on the midi track, the one at the bottom. it simply switches it on or off.

perhaps i should play around more before i post

...or read the manual that came in the box of the software that you paid for. (because anyone who spends that much on an item would surely read the manual)

Actually... you'd be pretty surprised by how many people who spend even low thousands of dollars on a system, still don't read their manuals before asking "n00b" questions.

I've owned Ableton since v5 and haven't read the manual...

That said I'd probably benefit a lot from it if I ever did!

You don't have to read the manual from cover to cover. I agree though that the first place you should check when encountering a problem is the manual instead of asking around.

if you read my first post, i did glance through the manual (must of missed it though) and i tried to find out via google.

didnt realise so much bother could arise from asking for a little help

Actually, it's not the people that buy and then don't read... it's the people that don't buy and then expect other people to walk them through it. Questions like yours are tell-tale signs that it's bootlegged.

By the way... when it comes to manipulating notes, record an arpeggiations from a chord midi track into another. Now you have an arp of the chord that you can manually manipulate. Saves a bunch of time, IMO.
