Unless you absolutely require a laptop, get a desktop instead I used to produce with a laptop and it was a nightmare, now I use a quad core desktop system and it flies.

It's more about the soundcard you get than the brand of laptop when it comes to recording.

Logic Studio. I swear that thing is made for EDM. It is extremely easy to learn and adapt to and everything is very well laid out. You basically don't need any extra VST's because everything right in LS is top notch quality.

As far as sound cards go, it depends on your budget. I have an M-Audio Firewire 410 but it's a buggy bitch so I wouldn't really recommend it. MOTU is where it is at in terms of quality, though it's a rather expensive card depending again on your budget.

If you're wondering I switched from Ableton 7 to Logic a couple days ago when I got Studio and have been easily adapting to it.

I got the Echo Indigo sound card for my laptop, and it's really great.
It doesn't look like much yet when you plug it in your cardbus it delivers an awesome sound. One of the best buys ever.

Sort of, the amount of (and perhaps the speed of) RAM present in the laptop can also come into play. Recording with a cheap soundcard can result in regular gaps in the recorded audio since cheaper soundcards can't handle the audio in memory and recording at the same time. It's very annoying if you intend to use the laptop for recording audio.

I dunno exactly what you should look for in a soundcard to avoid this though...

So how much do the MOTU sound cards run budget isn't really the issue right now but more in terms of quality I am looking for. I really do appreciate the help so much as I am going to purchase Logic now and how about a good synthesizer?
