The official Christmas hate thread
Maybe I'm not alone in this, but I'm starting to get sick of christmas. Of course as I kid I loved every minute, got in the mood a month in advance and got into the whole holiday cheer, but then I just grew out of it. I'm not religious at all, so in that sense christmas never had any deep meaning for me. I was brought up celebrating christmas as a "cultural" event, but now I just don't see the point.
Every christmas, I get criticized for not being "in the spirit" by fucking hypocrits who use this time of the year to try and convince themselves and others that they're decent people by doing things that they wouldn't do any other time of the year. Everything about it is dishonest.
I get criticized because I refuse to go to family gatherings to see people I don't even like, opting instead to stay home by myself and get wasted on cheap whiskey - but of course, that isn't "okay" behavior for christmas day, so I keep having to deal with all these fake cheerful folks trying to drag me back into the christmas machine.
Giving presents is shit. One way or the other, you're going to receive some (by annoying cheerful brats who won't leave you alone about how great fuckmas is), and if you haven't gotten them anything, you're going to feel like crap. So you're being forced into consuming for other people, who will in turn consume for others and feed an endless circle of consumerism ultimately leading into deficit (unless you're somehow cashing in on all this). I value my judgement as a consumer. Therefore, i'd much rather spend that money on myself, buying something I know I will appreciate. Let others do the same and everyone will be happier in the end.
Add all this to a healthy stack of bad memories, and the sound of a christmas tune is enough to bring me down completely. I'm not a particularly depressive type, but this season is an exception. January can't get here fast enough.
