Ladbrokes is a pretty big one in the UK.
Or TAB here in Australia.
Again, no idea if they're any good, I don't ever bet on stuff.

Legally, only at the casinos in Nevada (Las Vegas, Reno etc).
The US government passed a law over a year ago (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) which made it illegal for banks to process transactions coming from offshore gambling sites. (Good luck enforcing that). After this law passed, many online casinos (especially the traded traded on the London Stock Exchange) stopped taking business from US gamblers. There are still some sites and payment sites that cater to the US gambler, but it's harder to find now.
Having said that, it's still easy for us Americans to find a way to gamble online and in person, just not legally.
For original poster, I suggest the World Sports Exchange (www.wsex.com)
edit: except for betting on ponies, that's legal online in the US
