The general public is stupid, dont be so shocked. The main reason why people want an ipod is so that when theyre out in public and they whip it out from their pocket, they dont wanna look lame with an ugly player. Theyd rather have a 'shitbox' than something that performs the way it should, or sounds the way it should.
It took apple like 6 generations of ipods to catchup with everyone else in terms of battery, and theyre still forcing you to go through a 'charge cycle' everytime its plugged into a power source (usb as well), and while they do that, the battery is non-removable, so happy charging eventhough your battery is 85% full.
The latest batch of ipods, i have to admit, are rather nice, but if they were anywhere near as good as id like them to be, id have one already.
The major cons to them is still what its always been:
-Lack of removable battery
-No EQ setting
-Poor battery life
-Forced use of itunes, therefor no possibility of UMS.
The thing is, with the new ones, cover flow should be taken out completely, it bogs down the processor and im sure battery life would be improved at least slightly. The menu is pretty slow on the ipods, so its definitely not as fast as it used to be.
iPod touch though, now theres a miserable experience. I render this extremely overrated mp3 player as completely useless due to its tortured user interface; touch sensor. You cant 'touch' anything on that for shit, it FREQUENTLY either doesnt recognize what youve wanted to 'touch'or it executes something else. And with all that said, this makes the iPhone JUST AS USELESS. Even more so seeing how your going to be sending text messages, dialing (although the buttons on the num pad are big enough even for fat ass mcdonalds loving americans with fat fingers).
Truth is though, theres no single product out there that does everything right, im still waiting for something that does the following:
-Removable battery
-Both UMS/MTP mp3 transfer, so i get to chose if i want to use software or not
-Scroll wheel to go through lists of albums and artists
-Scrolling through 1hr+ livesets for quick time navigation, not like pressing and hold fast forward, (this is where ipod rules)
-divx/avi/mp4/h264 playback at 30fps and no software needed to transfer files
-40+ hour battery life for mp3 playback
-Physical size that of, for example, a Sony NW-HD5 (quite small, actually)
-5 band EQ
-Gapless
-Minimal, yet pleasing GUI
-Sleek design
Those are really my only requirements, or more of a wishlist, theres a lot of companies doing a LOT of those, some do most, but not all. The only thing right now that comes close, is the new Sandisk Sansa View, which does most but, as said, not all. Im *thinking* of buying it, seeing how it sells for only $140 for 8gb, theres a 16gb version too, and a 32gb is coming out soon (if not, already available).
