A YouTube guide to Electronic Music

I'm watching this now, but i'm not sure how accurate this really is:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=WJnL5tGqJWs

At least the first track he plays is supposed to be "techno" but i always thought techno is harder, faster? Anyway, take a look, see if you agree with this dude. I'd say this is more up to date than Ishkur's guide, albeit not as detailed.

God damnit, no ambient, dub, no mention of IDM or anything glitch, no breaks, no trip hop?

Good video though.

yeah - i actually stumbled upon this video because i wanted something to clearly explain the distinction between minimal, electro house, deep tribal, whatever else is very popular on TA at the moment. None of that in this video.

i know, huh?

does anyone out there have such a video? I see TA's having heated discussions about these genres and accusing one another of calling minimal electro, or calling electro minimal. Personally, I can see myself making these mistakes simply because I really can't tell the damn difference sometimes, even when someone else will swear that it's one genre rather than another. I just get confused because most of the popular genres of electronica now showcase very stripped down tracks. Tracks that don't allow strong melodies or too many (or any) lead instruments. Rather, they rely on endless subtle sounds and random, groovy arrangements of very robot-like basses and noises. hence the derivation of the term of "bleep bloop blop" - not that i support that term

anyway - can someone throw me a friggin bone here?!

I don't seem to recall ever hearing the term "deep tribal."

And as far as anything explaining clear distinctions regarding genre differences, good luck - my guess is you could ask 1000 different people and get 1000 different answers.

Edit: And from your above post, my guess is you're describing "tech house" or "minimal" (at least as those terms are used on here). Far be it from me to say what "is" or "isn't" something - but those seem to me to be the more a-melodic tunes you're describing.

Cant really put it into a decent definition, but it seems like minimal isnt that hard to recognize. Any (recent) Richie or Magda set is a perfect illustration (of the genre god himself - Dave Clarke- hates with a passion )

First track is indeed techno, but there's lots of subgenres of techno from slow to fast.

Nice video, with ROTFL text !

If you want to find out more about the sub-genres, unfortunately at this point Ishkur's guide is the only one that is willing to acknowledge them and give audio examples. I say that's unfortunate, because with only one guy putting it together it's not going to be perfect and there is a lot of bias towards/against genres due to Ishkur's personal tastes. It is however the best on the net(that I've found atleast).

This video is good, but you can't expect the guy to be able to cover all the bases in one 10 minute video. He obviousley has a bias towards trance and hardcore so more of those subgenres were included and he left out major genres like: Breaks, IDM, Ambient, ect.

There was an even worse one I saw, by some girl who makes videos of trance 'mixes' which are just minute long snippets of 1999/2000 cheese trance tunes mashed together. It made some ridiculous claim about how techno 'could sound like drum n bass' or something, ummmm yeah except it doesn't have 170bpm breakbeats.
