Johnny Depp has donated $2 million to a London children's hospital for saving his daughter's life.

The Hollywood actor secretly visited Great Ormond Street Hospital, where his eight-year-old girl Lily-Rose was treated last March after her kidneys failed, to personally hand over the sum as a thank you yesterday (14.01.08).

Johnny, who kept a bedside vigil with long-term partner Vanessa Paradis when their daughter was treated for E.Coli poisoning, has revealed Lily-Rose's health scare put the family through "hell".

He told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "It was the most frightening thing we have ever been through. It was hell. But the magic is that she pulled through beautifully. Great Ormond Street was terrific, a great hospital."

Filming of his movie 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' was halted while Johnny concentrated on nursing Lily-Rose back to health.

He said: "I don't know what anyone else's feelings were at the time - whether I was coming back or not. I wasn't sure if I would be able to.

"But Tim Burton, the director, and the production were unbelievably supportive and said, 'Look we're hitting pause.'"

Last November, Johnny spent four hours at the Great Ormond Street hospital reading bedtime stories to patients dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow after having his 'Pirates of the Caribbean' costume flown over from Los Angeles.

He also invited five Great Ormond Street doctors and nurses to the London premiere of 'Sweeney Todd...' last week.

I had the pleasure of meeting him during TIFF '04 and '06 while he was waiting to do press at my hotel. He's a really grounded guy who was happy to chat, not just to me (as important as I am) but to the hotel staff, from the executive chef right down to the cafeteria attendant, who happened to walk through that particular staff hallway in the course of business. He acknowledged every person who walked past him, and asked everyone who made eye contact with him how they were doing...and seemed genuine enough to make the odd quip at thier responses.

I think I'll bake him some cookies. $10 says I get a thank-you note.

It would be nice if he donated money to every children's hospital in the world sure, but that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that he shouldn't be held in high regard just because he donated money to a hospital, it's a nice story and all but there are people who donate just because they want to do something good, not because they feel like the owe the hospital something.

It's not that he just threw some money at them, but that he actually took the time to fly out his costume from Pirates and read sick kids bedtime stories. That's not hiding behind your money. That's just sheer good will and compassion.

He is a pretty odd person.

I would be more impressed if he did that at a random hospital also, not just the one that saved his little girls life. Sorry I'm not a big fan of celebrities at all. Nothing they do seems genuine to me. Having said that though, he is a lot better than Britney or Paris

I despise most things 'celebrity', hence why I posted something heart warming instead of 99% of gossip which is cringeworthy.

I also posted it because it seems genuine. Sure, just a $2m donation wouldn't have made me post but the fact that the guy donned his world famous costume to bring some happiness to very sick children for 4 hours made me smile inside and out.
