I remember the first time playing Secret of Mana all the way through, I didn't purchase the best armor yet from the cat, and went into that forest. God, the first Griffin Foot you encounter pretty much wiped out my entire party in one nice big kick... lol.
Love the music in the Mana Forest though, so relaxing.
Try some arranged game music albums... they have to be imported from Japan, in general. But also you might want to check this out:
Sorry for the small image... but it's an original piece of music from Hiroki Kikuta, the Secret of Mana musician, it's like one whole continuous track (not unlike a DJ mix), with different variations and melodies, and some slight avant garde sounds (like an annoying phone ring used as an instrument). It's quite a bit different from his work on the SOM soundtrack but may be worth a listen.

i remember reading somewhere that theres a music genre called 8-bit which i dont know if it just used 8bit systems to create sounds or samples, or if its the music itself found in the 8bit video game.
i guess by the term genre it would have to be the music itself. either way its weird to me

Ha, the music for that game ruled. I still get some of those songs stuck in my head, not having played it in like ten years or something. Some of my favorites:

You mean "chiptunes"? They have parties for this style of music all the time in NYC, check out "Nullsleep", "Hally" and "Virt", they are my personal fave chiptunes artists.

Chiptunes are also what Timbaland supposedly ripped off when producing one of his new tracks:
There's also a sizable VGM community, where fans of VGM soundtracks share info, etc (just like TA). Search Google for "Gamingforce", as they were a major VGM community while I was there.
Game+Watch: Chiptune parties?!? I wanna go, or better yet, throw one in ATL!
